I have the chance to pick up a set of 81 Scout Dana 44 axles (not sure of the gearing) that I am hoping to use on my CJ7 . I am going to look at them tomorrow and just want to know what to look for so they will be as easy a swap as possible.

If anyone has done this swap let me know what issues you had.

Thanks!

im swapping in scout II axles from a 79 into my 77 CJ5 right now. so far its pretty much bolt on for the most part. on the rear axle you have to move the spring perches about half an inch on each side. cant tell you on the front as im not ready to install it yet still have to have it regeared and locked

Any idea what the width of the Scout is since I have wide track axles in my CJ7 now?

Just bought a pair on the weekend

Rears seem easy straight rebuild move spring perches and install. Except the rear brakes are bit of a concern to me I have 78 scout Dana 44 's that have the deeper 11" drum on the rear. It seems these are the gold plated drums based on replacement price. Anyone have a lead on cheaper drums or good options on replacements. i see the pre 73 scouts shared the 11" drum with a CJ is it possible to bolt CJ 11" drum assembly to the latter scout Dana 44 's

the other option I am looking at is disc brake conversion but my choice in wrecking yards is very different than the us so I need to do some research first

As to front well rebuild turn C knuckles and outboard all sounds easy when said quick but looks like a big project to me

Still undecided on ratio either 4.56 or 4.88 and locker choice brain says ARB's wallet says look for other options

Let the fun begin:chug:

go here Back Country Binders-Home Page that's where i got the rear disk break kit for my scout axles. great person to deal with and very fast shipping i ordered on a Monday and it was in my hands on Friday everything went together very easily. its kinda pricey up front but by the time you track down all the parts then make them usable for your application its well worth the money.

The front axle caster angle needs to be reset. Scout used 0 degrees of caster because they ran bias ply tires. The bias ply would flex at speed and keep the truck stable. Radial tires will not do that so if you just put them on you will have allot of steering wander and possibly a dangerous Jeep. This part take a decent amount of work to perform since you need to cut and rotate knuckles. Also don't forget that the Springs need to be mounted outboard of the frame due to the pumkin getting in the way of the factory spring location.

I did a 1980 Scout 2 front end I had them cut off 3 5/8 turn the knuckes 10degrees (for a 4" lift) and reweld them back on.
