I have the opportunity to buy a set of Dana 44 's out of a 77 scout from a buddy and just curious what will need to be done as far as installation. Not asking for the whole process just some general feed back. I realize having to move the spring pads is part of it. My main concern is the front. The rear seems pretty cut and dry. Just a thought before I commit to the ones I have as far as regearing and lockers.

To get the caster and pinion angle right you need to cut off the steering knuckles and reweld them.

they have drum brakes , don't they?:barf:

If you have nay other questions to my thread that Pete linked then let me know.

and I guess my next question would be is it worth the swap? it doesn't see a lot of action but i do do some minor crawling and trails and usually take it pretty easy. definitely something to think about. the tubes in the rear 20 are welded and i have installed one piece axles and planning to truss it as well. maybe that's enough for what it will be used for but i also like that piece of mind of something heavier under there.

For what you are saying I think sticking to what you have is plenty witht he 6 cylinder. I wheeled for years with my stock beefed up axles through Utah and Moab. I think they are good match with up to 33 inch tires and the stock motor. I only built Dana 44 axles because the Jeep is under a full restomodation, they had the gearing I wanted they are extra wide axles plus the challenge of building them. Otherwise I would have stuck with stock parts.

I wheeled my 30/20 hard for years on 33's before I finally bent a tube on the 20 (no truss) the 30 never failed me with aftermarket axles.

I think for now I might just stick with what I have and maybe buy the axles since the price is right just to have if I ever decide to go down that road. Once again thanks for all the info. I know ive asked alot of questions since I entered the jeep world and theres always been someone on here to set me straight and I'm sure this wont be the last one. :chug:

I bought my Scout axles two years before I needed them. If they a re good deal then get-em and keep-em. :chug:

Running scout 44s in my CJ8 . Rear is cake. Front gets more complicated.
1. Caster. Grind knuckles rotate with 8 degrees. Reweld.

2. Choice. Shorten the drivers side axle or outboard the front springs. I out boarded

3 steering issues.. set up a 1 ton Y draglink. And use a waggy pitman arm.

4. Front will work oit better with a 4 inch sua lift. Soa will not work.

I hear waggy front 44s are better swap ins. But mine works great.

I have done the Rubicon and the Dusey on Dana 30 and Dana 44 combos with friends doing Dana 30 and c20 combos, nothing wrong with them. The value is up to you, you do know the C20 has a slightly better ring gear than the Dana 44 ?
