I would like to buy speakers for the dash in my 85 CJ7 and would like to know if someone could tell me what size those speakers are. I can't tell if they are 4'' or 5''1/4. Thanks for any help.

I could be wrong here, but I think my last CJ5 had 5 1/4" dash speakers. You may want to consider not doing dashboard speakers, but installing a speaker enclosure like this one:

Select Increments 91970 - Select Increments Centra-Pod Speaker Enclosure for 76-95 Jeep® CJ-5, CJ-7, CJ-8 Scrambler & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec

I have a similar box in my CJ5 . They sound great, and the position behind the Transmission means they're not in the way of anything. The 4" dash speakers without an enclosure to create some bass and mid-range will probably sound pretty bad.

Just my two cents. Good luck!

5 1/4" Dash

Kickers start at $49.99 a pair.

FYI = go to (Crutchfield.com) to find what fits any vehicle.

I have a pair of Sony XPlode needed a spacer since the front stuck out to far.

Yes, they are correct, you'll need 5 1/4" speakers. Make sure if they're dual cone that the center cone is flush and not protruding, or you'll also need a trim ring to space them away, but you only have so much stud too. You might want to look into marine grade speakers so water isn't an issue.

I used 1/4" cork for the stand off and gardeners weed cloth to slow down any water as it hit the grill. 5.5 " speakers with the biggest magnets I could find, I think they work pretty well.:D

Thanks everyone. Now I have some good ideas on how I can set up my speakers.

5.25 "bottom mount" so there is a flat surface on the cone side. Any plastic or poly cones will help with the weather. A piece of fabric can be used on the backside of the dash grill to simulate the factory cloth. I also use a back baffle to help with the side. Dash speakers CAN sound great but it takes good speakers and amplification. The center pods are not conducive to any type of stereo sound with the speakers in the center of the vehicle and almost on top of each other.
Anyway, here's a few picks of a Kicker component set going in my CJ. The magnets are large enough to require parking brake bracket trimming.
