When we last wrote of our Long Term '08 Grand Cherokee test vehicle, we had only 4,000 miles on it, and the new car smell was still present. We talked about the power that the little V-6 musters up, and how the diesel is very quiet and could easily be used as a grocery getter, tow-rig, and commuter vehicle.

I remember reading something about this. IIRC, Mercedes made the diesel to use some special lubricant that was VERY spendy. and the service was crazy $$$..Am I correct?

Edit. I just noticed the link to the write up. $111.00 bucks for a case of Amsoil is ridiculous.

Ouch! $111! I would seriously have to think about a purchase that requires something like that. IMO - The advantages of the drivetrain just don't justify the outlay of money.

I wholly agree. I actually got into a pissing match on another forum a while back over Amsoil. It has become almost a cult following these days, even at the insane price. My contention was, for 30 years of vehicle ownership I have used good old Castrol GTX and have never once had an oil related failure or breakdown. The cost is minimal, and I change it on schedule. Road tractors run an easy 500,0000 miles of torture on it before an in frame is even considered on them, so how bad can regular oil really be? If you were to add up the extra cost of the oil over the life of the vehicle, well, the numbers just make no sense to me at all.

One time while watching 'Extreme 4x4' they did a quick run down on how long it would take to make back the money you spend on a new Prius over converting to bio diesel on a 1/4 ton. The years it would take was staggering!
The same applies to all the high dollar items needed in the OP.

Like you I know that a simple regular maint. plan does wonders for a vehicles longevity. Don't need any magic oil... Now, I admit. I do run synthetic in my Mountaineer, but that is because I'm just a little lazy sometimes and I just change the filter, then every other time, the oil...
