I have a cj we just finished up and with the lift the original scissor jack won`t go high enough, SO i was thinking of purchasing a bottle jack, But need storage ideals.

I know it's totally unhelpful, but this is where I mounted my hi-lift jack. Couldn't stand it on the hood or bumper. To try to answer your question, If you don't need the old charcoal canister under the overflow tank, I would remove it and mount the jack there.

Under the battery tray is a good place.

Alright, here are a few storage ideas for a bottle jack in your CJ, keeping in mind space constraints and the need for accessibility. I'll format these with BBcode for you.

**Idea 1: Under the Seat (If Space Allows)**

This is often the easiest if you have any free space under your seats.

Pros: Easy access, hidden from view.
Cons: Might not fit depending on your seat type and bottle jack size, can get dirty.
Implementation:
  • Measure the available space under your seats.
  • Purchase a bottle jack that fits.
  • Consider wrapping the jack in a cloth or using a small toolbox to contain grease/dirt.

**Idea 2: Rear Cargo Area - Custom Mount**

This option involves creating a small, secure bracket.

Pros: More secure than just loose storage, can be mounted in a variety of locations.
Cons: Requires some fabrication skills or professional help, takes up cargo space.
Implementation:
  • Choose a location in the rear cargo area (e.g., on the wheel well, behind the seat).
  • Fabricate a bracket that securely holds the bottle jack in place. Consider using metal strapping with rubber lining to prevent rattling. A ratchet strap to secure it can be added security.
  • Bolt or weld the bracket to the CJ's body. Ensure it's a strong and secure attachment.

**Idea 3: Tool Roll or Bag in Rear Cargo Area**

This is a simple and flexible option.

Pros: Inexpensive, portable, can store other tools alongside the jack.
Cons: Jack might roll around, potentially damaging other items.
Implementation:
  • Purchase a heavy-duty tool roll or bag that is large enough to hold the bottle jack, handle and accessories.
  • Wrap the jack in a rag or bubble wrap for added protection.
  • Secure the tool roll/bag to the roll cage or cargo area using bungee cords or straps.

**Idea 4: Inside the Spare Tire (If Applicable)**

If your spare tire mount has sufficient space inside, this can be a very clever solution.

Pros: Hidden, utilizes existing space.
Cons: Might not fit depending on spare tire size and bottle jack size, requires modification to the spare tire carrier if needed.
Implementation:
  • Measure the space inside the spare tire.
  • Purchase a bottle jack that fits.
  • Potentially create a custom foam insert to prevent rattling and protect the jack.

**Idea 5: Bolted to Roll Bar/Cage**

This puts the jack in plain sight but keeps it easily accessible.

Pros: Easy access, keeps it off the floor.
Cons: Subject to the elements (dirt, rain), visible to thieves.
Implementation:
  • Purchase a clamping mount designed for accessories (like fire extinguishers) to attach to the roll bar.
  • Adapt the mount to securely hold the bottle jack.
  • Consider a cover to protect the jack from the elements.

**Important Considerations for ALL options:**

* **Safety First:** Ensure the jack is securely fastened to prevent it from becoming a projectile in an accident.
* **Accessibility:** Make sure you can easily access the jack when you need it, even in difficult situations.
* **Protection:** Protect the jack from the elements (rust, dirt) as much as possible.
* **Size Matters:** Measure carefully before buying a bottle jack to ensure it fits your chosen storage location. A compact bottle jack will make storage much easier.
* **Handle Storage:** Don't forget to think about where you will store the handle for the bottle jack. Keep it with the jack itself!

Good luck with your project! Let me know if you have any more questions.

I still have my original scissor jack and works well with 33s. I usually carry a short piece of 2 x 6 if I’m going to be out on the trail. I’ve actually thought about a bottle jack though.

I have a 4" suspension lift and 35" tires. I found a scissor jack that goes taller and mounted that just inside the driver door opening on the floor between the side and the driver seat. Here's a write-up with some pics:

Mine has a max lifting height of 19". With 35" tires, the height to the center of the tire is 17.5". The distance from the ground to the spring plate is about 13". So my jack placed under the spring plate can lift the tire about 6" off the ground before reaching max height. If placed under the axle tub itself rather than under the spring plate, I could still lift the tire about 4.5" off the ground.
