Last weekend I successfully installed high steer on my SOA 4 inch lifted CJ7 . During this modification I also installed a remanufactured Saginaw gearbox, a reman steer pump and new steer pump lines.

Upon my test drive, I found that the power steering would not work under 2500 RPMs. This is very problematic when one has an automatic Transmission .

My question: does high steer require more steering pump pressure than my old drop down Pitman arm/out of geometry steering?

If a higher pressure power steering pump is required, does anyone know what pump that might be and where to get it?

The other theory I have is that the remanufactured power steering pump I installed was a bad remanufacturing job. I have a second one on the way from Napa auto-parts Thursday.

As anyone on this forum come across these problems? Sure would like some opinions. Thank you.

A few months back I put in an ARG Super Box 2. I kept the old pump and it was hard to steer for a while. It seem ok now. I'm not sure if it needed to break in or if I just got used to it. I think a little of both.

A stock pump should work fine with high steer. (I assume you mean you used flat top knuckles and high steer arms).
I just had to put a new pump from AZ on mine. It did take a little work and time to get it all bleed.

Old Dog, first, sorry about the loss of your pooch. Second, I did not "correctly bleed" the system upon install and before test drive. What is your method for bleeding?

I just had to keep turning the wheels lock to lock till all the air was out. Took a couple days though.

As OD mentioned you should be fine with the stock pump, especially running your 33" tires. There is an option for folks running larger tires and feel they need a bit more pressure from the pump at idle/crawl.

Behind the HP line is the main fitting, flow piston, and spring. Remove the end cap on the flow piston, inside you'll find a spring, limiting stud, BB, and shim/shims. Some pumps have shims some do not. Add a 3mm washer in the bottom of the piston housing and under the spring. Grind off a bit from the limiting stud so it has room to travel and won't block off all the pressure. If you still feel you need more pressure go with a 4mm washer but only after you've tried the smaller 3mm washer first.

The above mod is for stock setups, there is other pump mods for running with hydro assist
