I have searched the net far and wide and can't find what I am looking for. Anyone else out there have a 1973 CJ5 or anything close?

I am curious if the rear drive shaft came stock with a double cardan joint.

I am going to replace the rear shaft due to this joint starting to go out... but I don't feel like it's necessary to have the double cardan. It is a super short shaft so maybe it was standard equipment?

they came with standard u joints in the rear. If you lift it much you will want a double cardan joint.

Sounds like you already have a double cardan or CV. If so, I'm sure you have a lift and/or non-original Transmission (longer) this is why the shaft you now have is short. All CJ5 's have fairly short shafts the 80's CJ5 with a T-4 being the shortest at 13". The other issue with switching back is the pinion is pointed at the Transfer Case or should be, standard it's level.

Thanks. Not aware of any real lift. Didn't think the double cardan was standard equipment.

I really don't have too much of an angle. I'm planning on getting a tom woods drive shaft and will take their advice on what to put under it :)

If your current D/S is in good shape why switch? To elaborate on things their used to eliminate drive line vibes from steep angles. A regular type shaft needs to be setup where the angles from the pinion yoke and T case yoke are no more than a degree or so or there will be vibes and accelerated joint wear. The Cardan type cures this however it requires the differential to be rotated to aim directly at the T case then the double joint takes care of the things. Woods website of any other good DS maker typically has lots of info on these details to read up on.

I think I have a weird set up someone rigged. I like simple. My first experience hasn't been a good one with the double cardan... However I do understand the reasoning. Either way its not going to save me much to have the joint rebuilt. Hence new drive shaft either way.

a double cardanjoint drive shat is a bonus if everything is set up for it's use
if not it is just some fancy stuff under there
no it is not stock
TW drive shafts are nice, pricey, but nice. If you do not need that you can get a really nice shaft built at any driveshaft shop and they can help make sure you are set up to use it also.
Drive down to your local driveshaft shop and give them a chance:D
