1981 CJ-5 - currently strippd of body and gutting Iron Duke and frame off restoration in process!!!! Wooo Hooo......
I have a CJ5 81 and am taking off the drive line. It has these crazy gear like nuts. Not torn head or star but similar. Any ides on what they would be. It's a spicer joint

Thanks n advance!!!

They should be 12 point 5/16.

Thanks so much for the help.....turned out to be 1/4" but you helped. And of course, buying the set did not include the 1/4" so i had to go back and get the solo piece! :(

Thats what a rebuild is all about!!!!:chug:

Those are called Torxheads, Torx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, which are a real pain. I am not sure when AMC started using them. If you look at the male thread you will notice that they are not round either, it might help prevent them from coming loose. The only ones I have left on my CJ are the rear front driveshaft where they can be removed easier than having a hex head. I would like somebody to tell me of a better fastener for that location. All my other u-joint straps have been converted to the older style 5/16 u-bolts. Eliminating them helps from carrying another set of wrenches on the trail.

The ones that were in my u-joints were kinda removed using an E-socket. (That's what the package said)

I will replace them all with the standard 5/16 bolt after I get them all off! The PO had done serious damage to a few with what looked like alligator teeth in years past.....

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

FWIW you really should replace the straps when you change the joint.
The spicer # 2-70-18X strap kit comes with hex head bolts.

These are the exact ones I have to replace with when it goes back together.:chug:
