Ok, Here is a question that only you guys would understand. I have built my jeep for long distance driving on adventures to the middle on nowhere. This includes not having doors or sides on my top. I am wondering if anyone has experimented with headphones of some sort with a mic to communicate with a passenger at highway speeds. Also would be nice to sync with my radio to actually listen to the radio at highway speeds with no doors. Maybe what I am asking is not even legal. I know that a lot of motorcyclist have it in their helmets but thought it would look weird to have helmets on in a jeep riding down the highway. Thanks in advance for any help with this!

The most I have done when I had my Challenger was use the helmet mount wire communications between my passenger and I

Make sure you check local laws, here in Ca its not legal to cover both ears (unless something has recently changed )

Haven't tried it in a CJ, but fire trucks have an intercom system for just that purpose. The driver's headset covers the right ear, but the rest are two cuppers. It would work great, but you won't like the price...... now, if you could find a truck being taken out of service ya might be able to score what you need..... but that's a real long shot. Newer trucks use wireless headsets...... and most systems have AUX inputs for MP3 players, phones, etc.

Maybe what I am asking is not even legal.

I'd say as long as the driver's left ear is open you should be ok, but verify......

I sometimes would rather not communicate with my passenger.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, nicely played

Go to your local military surplus store and buy a steel pot helmet. When stopped at a light and notice someone is looking at you funny, just say to them that you got your Jeep insurance from The General! Then speed away.
It could work!

Dave Clark makes a system. There are also amateur radios that have blue tooth capability for intercom. Also a two head Kenwood TK-730 has an intercom feature. Another place to check is military surplus aircraft, lot of them had headset intercoms.

Amazing that nobody mentioned texting yet.

I believe texting while driving is illegal in many places, it sure is not safe. Many places we go offroad there is no signal.

This may have been mentioned, but I believe you can get a headset for many frs type radios. Just a thought... Single hand signals usually work for my husband and I regardless of who is driving.... hahaha [emoji4]

The texting comment was a joke. In reality people who do that while driving just **** me off!

Another solution is perhaps trying to find an old military surplus intercom system out of an armored vehicle. The CVC helmets have built in exterior mics so you can hear ambient sound as well if you want. The latest generation system we had in my last Bradley was pretty good, at least it let me hear the RPG when it was fired so I could duck. The CVC helmets do look pretty stupid and can be heavy but you would definitely look apocalypse ready with a system like that. This company sells them but I bet they are stupid expensive (https://at-communication.com/en/mil.../at-dvis-digital-vehicle-intercom-system.html) I know the helmets run about $1,000 because I had a dismount that had to pay for one after his idiot self let his get crushed in the ramp on my track, he also got his weapon stuck in the turret and destroyed it to so he was pretty much a rock with lips.

....... so he was pretty much a rock with lips.

OMG LMAO - That’s funny right there. I think I know some of his kin folk

When I do some of my 20+ hour motorcycle rides I use a hard wired system from AutoCom to listen to my GPS, MP3, phone.

There are also Bluetooth models from Sena and Scala Rider that dont need a wire and will let you do the above plus talk with someone in your close area.

down side is most are attached to helmets.

Late to the party, but surprised no one mentioned these guys:

All kinds of offroad radio and communications gear.

And most of it illegal to use. They are real good at selling you something without telling you an FCC License is needed. I'm waiting for the FCC to slap them with a few hundred thousand dollar fines.

True, but they also have headsets that directly link together, no radio involved. It looks like you might could use them to hook into some headunits to get music/radio/etc and still talk to one another.

Unrelated .... in a way, but on the general topic......
Use ear plugs, it is amazing how much this will make communications easier. The ear plugs block road and and noise actually improving voice communications. ....... Now for the odd part. For years ear plugs were a must for long distance motorcycling and jeep trips. From what is written here it seems that ear plugs are illegal to use while driving. For me ear protection is a must have. Without'em my ears feel like they are about to bleed after a long trip.
