1984 Cj-7, rebuilt 258i, Carb-Motorcraft 2150, TFI ignition, T-176, Dana 300, dana 30 in front, Rear Dana 44, 4in lift, 33in tires, 4:10 gears
So on my way to work, driving on the freeway, I think my Transfer Case might have locked and broke. My front drive shaft broke off, and all this fluid leaked out which i assume was from the Transfer Case . When i put it into gear she doesn't move. I had to get her towed and wasn't actually able to take a good look at it.

Does anyone think its the Transfer Case ? and what's an estimate to fix something like this? Sounds like i would need a rebuild i think.. I'm not sure what to expect. I would appreciate some input. Thanks.

Time to get dirty and visit a junkyard. Maybe you will find a replacement that has a 4 to 1 kit installed.

do you ever come out near Oklahoma city? I have a couple T-5 /Dana 300 cases for sale.

Were you in 4x4?

Front drive shaft breaking off could have been anywhere from the front hubs to the Transfer Case output. Or it could have just been the drive shaft.

BUT you can't get it to move now either, so dumb question, did you check where the stick is on the Transfer Case ? Did it by chance pop into neutral?

Don't mean to belittle you, just wondering if you actually need the new case or just some seals etc.

Going to have to get 8under her and check it all out before buying new parts i would suggest...

If it makes you feel any better I broke my jeep this last weekend too :D
You'll get her back on the road bud!

i noticed that my hubs were turned to 4x4, i hope i didn't mess up the gears inside. But here are some pics of what i saw this morning, looks worst than i thought. Oh and the 4x4 stick just moves up and down all loose that looks like it broke off to from underneath.

yep you tore it up good...I answered your PM BTW.

when your u joint broke it slapped the :censored: out of everything there... you're going to need new cases and internals...

I would get together with mike above or find other suitable used replacements if on budget...

Looks like you may have blown the case in the tranny and well as Transfer Case .

I'm thinking your u joint was running dry... My rear one did simular to the back, but no where near the damage you've got bud... that's tough luck....

:(

WOW you junked it good.:(
looks like it's time for some new parts.

What a mess
Note to self...not to have the hubs in unless needed.

ouch well if you didnt need one you do now,,and yes never leave the hubs locked in all the time

:)Wow...........looks like a hand grenade went off under there.........that's pretty rare..........don't know if the drive shaft was first or not? almost looks like the parts were coming from the inside out? Lots of junk under there.
:D:D:D:D

Looks to me like you were in 4hi. You should be able to drive around all year round with the hubs locked and it's not going to hurt anything but your gas mileage but this is what happens when you drive in 4wheel drive on dry streets. Looks like you need a new Transfer Case and front drive shaft.

This reminds me... I need to check my u-joints! Yikes! Had something similar happen on a Wagoneer yrs ago.. the double joint failed on the front shaft doing about 60, man did that mess up some stuff...
