I was looking at this website DriveEV.com: JeepEV - Jeep Cherokee EV conversion regarding the electric motor conversion to a Jeep Cherokee. It would be great to do something like this, but I believe the 50 mile range and the hundreds of pounds of batteries that have to be stored somewhere in the vehicle make it totally impractical. The modern hybrids resolve that problem, supposedly, but then we get into some really complex mechanics etc.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever made, or thought of making, an electric conversion for a Jeep that uses a small diesel generator that can run on bio-diesel to power the electric motor. I believe this is how diesel locomotives work. The electric motor can be mounted to the tranny and powered by the small diesel generator, thus eliminating the batteries and providing normal, or better, range.

Anyone think this is feasible?

I have been lead to believe that is inefficient. Supposedly the LeTourneau style Diesel electric is the more efficient method. Basically using a Diesel powered generator, a rheostat and a electric motor at each wheel.

I have not traced anything which may satisfy your desire towards combined fuel automation with bio-diesel to be converted to electricity as fuel. Still you may go through the following and find an answer for today, and I should say for till-today.
The Honda FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle provides 270 miles of driving period with 5.3 kilos of hydrogen. Hydrogen extracted from water is the main source of energy as Hydrogen has clean-burning property.
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have the potential to be combined with alternative fuels and fuel cells for additional benefits. Chevy Tahoe Hybrid is a 5840 pound SUV, Yukon SUV and the 2009 Cadillac Escalade, Honda Civic hybrid, Saturn Aura Green Line Hybrid and Nissan Altima Hybrid are for combined fuel economy.

I Didn't mention "Bio Diesel", but Diesel electric is what I was talking about in post #2. Icon has purposed this for their "Dog" Retro CJ3b .;)
