Electric jeep?

I was looking at this website DriveEV.com: JeepEV - Jeep Cherokee EV conversion regarding the electric motor conversion to a Jeep Cherokee. It would be great to do something like this, but I believe the 50 mile range and the hundreds of pounds of batteries that have to be stored somewhere in the vehicle make it totally impractical. The modern hybrids resolve that problem, supposedly, but then we get into some really complex mechanics etc.
I was just wondering if anyone has ever made, or thought of making, an electric conversion for a Jeep that uses a small diesel generator that can run on bio-diesel to power the electric motor. I believe this is how diesel locomotives work. The electric motor can be mounted to the tranny and powered by the small diesel generator, thus eliminating the batteries and providing normal, or better, range.
Anyone think this is feasible?
