I bought a 1986 CJ7 2.5L . It had an off frame restoration and the frame and body are good. The gauges, lights, wipers, radio work fine. The previous owners had a small fire/hot wires melted under the hood next to the valve cover. They pulled a few of the wire connections apart and I am trying to replace the wiring. The only damage is about 12 to 15 wires in a 6 inch section. Where can I get a good wiring diagram that a normal person can understand?
I went to ebay and they do not have the wiring diagram for 86 CJ7 .
I have the wiring finished. There were some wires that the previous owner pulled apart so I was hoping I got it back together correctly. The jeep won't start. I replaced the starter solonoid , ignition coil and the oil sending unit. still no luck. It is getting gas but still no spark.
My gas gauge does not work either.
Any ideas anyone.
I connected the coil straight to the battery and still won't start. Put in new spark plugs, still no joy. The only thing in the ignition sequence that I have not replaced is the distributor cap, rotor and points.

I just finished an 86 CJ7 with a 2.5. One consideration is that I stripped mine of all the emission stuff and put a weber on it. I also did the Nutter bypass.
It runs like a sewing machine.
Be glad to send you pictures of what I have if you don't have all that emmission stuff to deal with.
Just did a nutter bypass. Started right up. I can hear a vacuum leak, probably cause the previous owner removed alot of stuff. There are about 5 vacuum lines coming from the firewall and I have no idea where they go. Little help please.
I need to get a timing light in the morning so I can adjust it so it doesnt sound like
a chain saw.
So basically, your 'computer' is no longer advancing your timing for you.
All that vacuum stuff is fugly.
I am leaving to go out of town this morning and won't be back until Monday afternoon.
The only vacuum hose remaining on mine is from the distributor to the carb. Everything else is removed.
Now that you have the nutter bypass done, all you need is a Weber or Motorcraft 2bbl carb and you will be ready to go vacuum free.
This would be before and after.
I got a WEBER 32/36 DGEV CARB off eBay for $279. A lot of people are happy with the motorcraft. One thing about the Weber is you have to add a fuel pressure regulator ($30)
Once you replace the carb you can cap off all those vacuums.
After the nutter bypass and carb replacement you can also get rid of all those wires coming out of the so called computer. You will probably end up replacing your exhaust also with one that doesn't have a catalytic converter. I bring that up because several of the things in the emission system go back to the exhaust.
What I did was replace the carb and after it was running good, I traced back all the disconnected stuff to the computer harness and cut them off one at a time. I have two wires still going into the computer, but I am 95% certain I don't need them. I just haven't taken the time to figure out what they are.
Duwhat,
do you have more pictures of your jeep. There are quite a few wires running across the top of the manifolds and next to the valve cover. I don't see any on your jeep.
What did you do with them?
Did you have any problems with oil blowby? I certainly am.
