Engine flooding?

I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6cyl with the Carter 2bbl. On any steep incline the engine starts cutting out like it's flooding. Doesn't seem to matter how hard I push the accelerator. Any thoughts? Thank you!

That's the main reason I'm going with fuel injection on my new engine.

That's the reason I took a cheaper route than Belizean and swapped the Carter out for a MC 2100 carb.
I'm sure fuel injection is way better but so far so good on the 2100.

I also went with the MC2100. Their cheap, easy to work on and easy to set up for off road. No doubt that fuel injection can be better but in my case, I have a hard time figuring out problem when electronic stuff goes wrong. I understand carburators. There's lots of info on the web on how to set one up. There was a good site that I found a few years back but I can't seem to find it now.

I went back and forth between the Weber and the MC. Researched the heck out of it and decided on the MC.
They both have pros and cons, from what I have read the Weber comes in a complete ready to bolt on kit which would make it a little easier to install. You can also get the MC in kit form. [carb, adaptor plate etc] but you will have to modify your throttle linkage and return spring a bit to get it to work. It wasn't very hard to do.
The MC won out because of the ease in which to tune, rebuild, parts availability etc. And just seemed [to me] a more reliable carb.
I just installed it a couple of days ago so time will tell if I made the right choice but so far I am happy with my decision.

I tried the weber before I went to the MC2100. Mostly because people said it was a better carb. It was better than the carter but I still was having problems with off canter situations so I went to the MC. I haven't regretted that decision.

You sure it's not from lack of fuel?
Do you have the return line on your fuel filter at the 12 o'clock position?
When was the last time you replaced said filter?
When was the last time you ck'd the float setting?

I just put a new fuel filter on it last year.

I'm going to put a new one on it this weekend. My jeep sits all winter and gets maybe 1500 miles all summer.

If the new fuel filter doesn't improve the condition, I'll be searching for a MC carb.

When was the last time you rebuilt that carb?
I like the Carter BBD and rebuild mine every 2-3 yrs.
How do you know it's NOT a fuel delivery issue?
Did you confirm the position for the fuel return line on the filter?
How do you know this isn't a vacuum leak somewhere?

I have the Webber for about 28 years and love it 99% of the time. Great improvement over the original. My only problem is on the side of a mountain off canter starting & stopping. That's exactly why I want that fuel injection. I know it's not cheap, but I've had my jeep 35 years and time to spend some money on improvements.
