Engine oil

Wow you just opened up a can of worms with that question ! :). Castrol 10-30 now for 238,000 miles. When I put my new engine in an oil with ZDDP fortified

Valvoline 15-40

No such thing as a 1987 CJ7 . :poke:
For the last 34+ yrs, I have used Castrol 20W-50.
With a WIX(OEM)oil filter.

Whatever oil you use, just be sure it is high in zddp which is zinc. Most modern oils have reduced the amount of zinc as most motors have roller cams these days. The motors in these old jeeps are flat tappet and rely on zinc for proper lubrication. A few oils still have zinc just read the labels, also you can buy Zddp additives.
I use Kendall GT1 10w-30 in my CJ, but it's a SBC roller motor. I also have a VW powered dunebuggy and use Kendall GT1 20w-50 which has Zddp in it.

If you still have to play the SMOG testing game.
Be very cautious about high ZDDP engine oil, as it will mess up your 'cat' and O2 sensors.
BTDT......

Correct. Unfortunately it's one of the reasons the oil company's have reduced or removed the zinc, just have tobe careful in your oil choices. If you use an additive don't over do it, read the label. A good site that explains this is Bob the oil guy.

I use Shell Rotella in my Duramax diesel. I know Shell now makes Rotella for gas vehicles, so be sure to read the label, don't want to get the diesel oil.

While I am no oil or jeep purist (pun), it came across that way. I really don't care who runs what! Most people have no clue and just get whatever is on sale and dump it in, same for filters. Rotella diesel oil does have Zddp in so I can see the attraction, but it also has soot inhibitors in it too, so why spend money on an oil you won't get the full benefits from? I realize oils and filters are a bone of contention for some people, just read some of the threads on bitog. On here it more about education and Vesuvio asked.

The ZDDP in all oils has been really reduced of late.
The big deal about most 'diesel' oil is the extra detergent in the chem package of the oil.
The soot inhibitors will also help to reduce built up sludge.
