Ok so Im completely a novice. Had the jeep a month. Im driving back to the house down the county road and the engine suddenly just shut off. Couldnt pop the clutch and start while still going. Once stopped, engine cranks but no start. Checked plugs, carb, I think its not getting fire. Does this sound like something specific to anyone??? Going fine then engine just shuts off??? Where should I start? Need some advice. Thanks in advance

if no spark i would take the module to a parts store and get it checked. if its a aftermarket china one its probally bad.

Probably the ignition control module or coil. You can take the ICM to autozone to test. They only run $30 or so for a cheap one, coil is $15 or so.

Could be more simple like loose wire on coil or more complex, sometimes you have to chase these things down.

Just saw dalefan so make that x2

I had this happen. Turns out it was the cheap Chinese distributor cap. Try a new cap and rotor. Easiest and cheapest to replace. That's where I would start.

thanks guys. I will start with the cap and rotor. thats the only thing i didnt change with the tune up kit. I was also offroad today, as it is deer season so something could have come loose even though i checked everything. Just thought it was so odd the engine would just completely shut off with no indicating signs....

It could be the cap but I would bet lunch it was the module.:D

Just happened to me recently... Was leaving sons soccer game and wouldnt start...

Yes, it was the ignition module.... THEY SUCK !!

But before my buddy was going to tow me home, I wacked the module housing with a wrench and got lucky and it started. !!

It was pretty late and parts stores were closed by then. Had to WACK it 3 or 4 more times that evening.

Give that a shot.. By no means is that a definitive fix or test of the module. I just got lucky and it worked for me. If for some reason your Jeep does fire after that, there is your answer for sure. Like I said, even if it doesnt fire after wacking it, the module could still be the problem...

Good News!! Started witht he basics and just replaced the dist Cap and rotor. She fired right up!! Love it when it works out that way. Thanks for the advice. Love this forum!!!:chug:

You might want to consider the TeamRush upgrade. You could just do the distributor cap/spark plug wires portion of it. You can keep your original coil and ignition module. Extremely easy to do. It will give you brass contacts on the distributor cap instead of the cheap aluminum ones. This will last a lot longer.
You can live dangerous and do the whole thing for about $AMC 150 .
