he said its a 2.5? i would just sell it to him but he's a good friend lol. I told him i'd sell him the AMC 304 and my CJ7 but he was saying it would take too much work lol.

Ok I’m in over my head. The AMC 304 into a wrangler was challenging enough but now your pulling a 4 and dropping an 8 and an old 8 at that. I would be looking for another 4 or maybe a 4.0 for this swap or maybe look a little deeper into what is wrong with the motor he has. “blown” is used too often to describe “I don’t have a clue what is wrong, it won’t start”.
many, many problems, not worth it really i'd just look for a 4.0.
but to answer your ? you'd have to change motor mounts, radiator, most likely Transmission , if you change trannies youd have to have an adapter to the x case if you change x case you'd have to find something that will get you a driver side drop, unless you are changing out the axles as well. now if you happen to have an ax-15 tranny it probably would hold up to the AMC 304 but you'd need an adapter for it, and a different clutch. i'm sure i've missed something or maybe wrong about a few minor details, but rest assured it won't be the easiest swap you could do, but doable it is.
In all honesty it would probably be easier/cheaper to swap in a sbc, th350, and chevy x case, instead of the AMC 304 . now wait a minute chevys are pass. side drop i suppose you could clock the x case, idk at this point i'm rambling on and on and on, uh it might help to better answer your question if we knew the Transmission in the yj, ah hell sell it and buy a cj, i mean the thing has square headlights for cryin out loud. i am surprised you read this far before getting discouraged, because if it were me reading this i'd have given up already, and sold the yj (AAHHHH) and bought a cj, or even a tj but no yj(AAHHH) i mean it is a Yuppie Jeep he he he he ok now if you are still reading at this point you've probably figured out that i've given up on being serious because well i don't really know the reason other than i don't believe that it would really be worth putting the AMC 304 in a yj (AAHHH) well i hope this helped you out a little bit and maybe gave you a little chuckle, if not then #%&^ you man cause i spent alot of time typing this out and.... ouch sorry i had a hand cramp i think i might be getting carpel tunnel syndrome or something well being as serious as a heart attack good luck feel free to ask anymore questions, oh and let us know what kinda tranny that thing has in it. out.........
67 cj5,225 Dauntless, D30,chrome molies, detroit, D44, full floating detroit, custom steering, disc all the way around,2 inch lift on 31s, armored up
70 cj6 4 inch lift
like stated above, any gains he will receive will be expensive due to the amount of adapters he will need to get. If he is good, and can do a lot of fabrication himself he will be dealing with radiator, new heater hoses, all engine electrics and parts. adapt all pulleys to fit and that just starts the list, designing mounts and all then buying drive train and designing mounts for that. It does him no good as the jeep will be down for several months if he worked on it every weekend.
His best bet for a quick get up and run is a new 2.5
His best bet for an upgrade will be a 4.0 (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ?) however that means a new tranny and to replace the input of the Tcase as the tranny behind the 2.5 has a different output spline than the 6 banger and the tranny is a lot weaker than the 6s unit.
I think your friend is stuck unless he wants to get into big money. as all that stuff is still in demand and expensive.
i'm thinkin a little more clear this morning, i think that 86 would be the last year that a AMC 304 swap could be economical/easy, and thats only if its got a T-176
