Exhaust recomendations

need a new muffler and tailpipe on my 1980 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . It has 2 inch pipe from the manifold back and guy at muffler place told me that for a flowmaster/magnaflow to sound halfway decent it needs at least 2.5'' pipe all the way from the manifold, otherwise the muffler has a "chirping" sound. I could put a glass pack with existing pipe but don't want it that loud.

Anybody have any suggestions or experience dealing with this?

I think you should go to a different muffler man, the 2" pipe should be plenty.

I just did the same about a year ago. I was told the same by the muffler shop. I put on a flowmaaster 40 and a 2.5 inch tail pipe. It didn't really change the sound much. So, I will try doing a high flow cat, since I need a new one, and do 2.5 pipe from the maifold. We'll see what happens.
