Looking for ideas or brain farts.
I need to carry a second spare tire. Now there's not a lot of cargo space in a CJ7 , so I'm looking for a good way to carry a 32x11.5 without eating it all up. I have an old swing carrier that I could cut down and maybe bolt through the fender housing. Anyone done anything like this?

Not too keen on the up-top mount. Us old guys might have a problem with getting it up that far, this will be a short time need, and I'll need to have at least a bikini top for shade.
Reason for two spares is the trails I'll be running are mostly sharp volcanic rock - real tire biters. I'll be staying off the skinny pedal as much as I can to avoid spinning tires, but need the insurance.
Worst case, I can just strap it down on the floor and stack stuff on top, but I'm looking for better ideas.

Short of building a custom setup; I'd say stand it upright and strap it to the down tubes of the roll bar. Not ideal, but for a "short time need", it should work. Strapping it to the tub and stacking gear on top would be a huge PITA if you need to get to it on the trail. JMHO...

My base idea will be off the only rack I have ever wned that was worth having. Garvin or wilderness, same compny makes a good one for tjs, I will model after that

Can you hang it from the other spare? It'd look like you've got a dually spare, but it'd get it out of the way.

Or... hang it in front of the grille, like on a Range Rover.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe by using some long allthread rod that goes through the unused holes on the existing spare through the extra one. Just a quick unbolt and you could access either of them. Would not cost more than a few bucks and not a long term change to your CJ.

How about a mount for the side like the older jeeps had.

I like the idea of fastening both spare to each other, may make for a lousy departure angle though. :(

It would be hard to flip it over backwards though.

Keep 'em coming guys. With this many great minds something good is bound to show up. Concern with bolting the spares together, other than departure angle: seems that would be a lot of extra weight hanging out there. The current mount is already extended to allow for jerry cans. A side mount (outside like the old style) would mean holes in the body, plus increase the width. Strapping to the roll bar inside might work - have to check that and see if the angles would let me secure it. Ahh, challenges and opportunities.

I've seen them mounted on the pushbar, on the hood like a Landrover, on the inside of the rollcage support like the old scrambler mount.

If you contrived a clever custom carrier to hang 'em side-by-side at the rear, they'd only overhang 2" on each side. They'd endanger your taillights, though.

How about... do you have a receiver hitch? You could build a carrier that plugs into it & holds the second spare just behind the first.

Longhorn suggested it. On the front like a Land Rover.
