I'm not sure if all of you guys will agree but CJ's is one of the most expensive toys to keep... especially if you want it to be customized the way you want it to be. To some reflecting once personality to his CJ's would be dependent on how he portrays himself to the painting job of his CJ. Now, could you give us some tips on how to save on the painting job, chasis works and others in order to get what kind of image you want from your CJ?:cool:
 
Although we all complain about the cost of a CJ, I think It's mostly just kidding. If I were to break down the cost of my Jeep over the years, It would probably be the cheapest vehicle I ever owned. Of course, just like any other vehicle, you can go nuts and spend yourself into the poor house on it. That aside, one of the most common mistakes new jeep owners make is to not have a clear idea of what they want from their Jeep, and just start buying "stuff" for it. Often times the part is wrong, looks bad, was an impulse buy, or just looks dumb when it goes on. Then those parts end up in a box or for sale and turn into a waste of money. Figure out exactly what you want your Jeep to be inside and out, then buy the parts, and do the work ONCE, not over and over again. Just think carefully before you spend your money, and know what you want.
 
I think Dave hit the nail on the head. I started out building a street Jeep and than changed to a trail Jeep. I now have a pile of parts in the corner of the garage that I have no use for.:eek:

What the hell was I thinking boxes, craigslists ads and ebay auctions... We've all done it at least once. Some of us are a little thicker than others, but we've all done it. :)

This is a funny thread....mostly because it is so true. I have certainly tried on a bunch of ugly dresses that are now hidden in my garage. :rolleyes:

I'll have to agree with coldwater on this one. I think the most important thing to know before buying stuff is knowing what you want. I know it is easier said than done, but doing so research in advance is free. Making "newbie" purchases can be costly. I think this is a good site to ask around for advice before you actually pull out your wallet.

Is there some 3D software that will allow you to "try" how a part or external customization will look like on your jeep?
 
you know what guys, its a good thing that i ask questions regarding your experiences and ways with regards with your jeeps. I'm really learning a lot from you guys. Dave it was a good point I will always keep that on mind when the day comes when i will buy my own jeep... for now i'll enjoy talking with you guys but to actually hold the wheel of my own jeep might take awhile:(
 
I think the most important thing to do when starting a jeep build is to write a list.
you sit down, think of exactly what you want for the jeep, such as what the end result is, research what parts you will need. And then write a list.
Now, stick to that list. Do not let eye candy make you vary from it.

So many guys never did the homework. ( I was guilty og that a few times ) never knew what they wanted.

SO, decide FIRMLY what you want. that can take a while but you have plenty of time, life goes on, you do not have to rush like a junkie does with a drug.
RESEARCH the parts, this is a great place to do that, remember to search the archives, search is a powerful tool, also the only stupid question is the one you are embarrassed to ask. Face it a silly question can save you thousands of dollars.
Make a LIST and STICK to it. Once you change directions you end up spending a ton of money replacing already installed parts.
If you change your mind in the middle of a build, you did not decide what you wanted before you started your research. But guess what, most of us are guilty of doing that at one point also. There is a reason Jeep means: Just Empty Every Pocket
 
Baja my decisions and plans on my Jeep have more branches than my family tree, But that's the fun in owning one you can change it whenever you see something else or what you have done doesn't fit your bill anymore. A plan is a great way to get you going in the right direction though:chug:.
Oh and another thing when I bought my first CJ5 back in 86 there was no internet and everything we had to go on was word of mouth and magazines so those who are new into CJ's definitely take Baja's advise and research your parts and make a list or two because it WILL help save time and money in the long run.
 
Very good topic, as we all look at what we want in a different light.
I know for myself basically what I want is a good "swiss army knife" type Jeep, but I am flexible and looking for good deals on parts that will work for me. I'm not dead set on a 4" lift, as a spring over might be better, but will require more work. My budget is my most limiting factor at this time, but it could change (hopefully for the better one day), but it never hurts to keep an eye out for that "must sell" type of a deal, which is how I found my Jeep! :D
Read, research, and learn abit about everything, then when a deal passes by, grab it!
 
..my "what the Hell was I thinking box" came on 35 inch wheels with 5.38 gears.......~jeesh~..now I am committed or as my wife says "you should be committed"..Just Empty Each Pocket she says...I have to admit, I am having a lot of fun fabbing doo-dads for it, just finished tube doors, now working on the body..yeas, never did body work in my life...who really cares...the beast will end up a Trailer Queen (the CJ, not my wife) or local driving only

sheesh what was I thinking. But I still love the therapy of working on it even though it screws with my head at times uh the Jeep not the wife. ( like the sealant issue).
