Started disassembling my CJ and thought that the mounting of this roll bar looked a bit odd. Thinking it was moved forward by the PO in order to run the 3 point seat belts. Anyone know if it is supposed to mount further back? Did the 79 come with 2 point belts from the factory?
Thanks in advance!

Not only moved forward, not attached properly.
The belts would have been lap belts only.
You could source a later style CJ7 bar that also goes to the floor right behind the seats and would allow for shoulder belts.
I wouldn't trust the current roll bar as shown.

Can you swap a later YJ "family" style bar in a CJ7 easily?

So there is no way to use this bar properly installed and retain the shoulder belts? If so I would also be interested if the yj family roll bar would work.

I have seen alot of people change over to the Yj family bar sould be no big deal.

Well, using that bar back into the factory position would move the shoulder belts waaay back behind you...hard to get to and would probably do a number on you in a rollover....
I'd look for the later floor/wheel well mounted bar myself...if you want to use shoulder belts.
I have no knowledge concerning the YJ family bar.
