Any seam should be protected from water infiltration where moisture can get in and hide. And if moisture can get in so can air, the other ingredient for rust to occur. Even if the surfaces are painted, vibration can rub thru over time. The factory sealed these up after assembly, but if it fails at that one edge, water can get in, as many of us have seen.<br />
If you can find a butyl tape that would probably work too. Any auto body supply place should be able to help you.</div>
