In a frame off rebuild for a long time...
Besides the classic glasspacks or Purple Hornies (gotta love that name!)
What is everyone using for a compact, good sounding, free-flowing muffler? I've seen a couple Turbo style, but I think they will hang a bit low. I use the Jeep for mud racing and a bit of rock crawling when I get the urge.

360 v-8 with Hedman Fenderwell headers. About 2 1/4 inch diameter and 22" long Glasspacks currently.

Whats the matter with the glasspacks? They sound great behind my 360 , or are you just up for something new?

I run a Flowmaster 40, but if you think the turbo style will hang too low, the 40 probably will be too. Flowmaster has a muffler called the hushpower hp-2, looks like it could be what you're looking for?

Yea I'm ready for something new...The packs are completely blown (and have been since I bought the Jeep).
I am getting ready to install a replacement engine so I can work on the race engine before next summers races, and I have a nice set of Aluma-coated headers to go on it. So I want to upgrade the mufflers at the same time.

Plus I think the neighbors are getting tired of hearing the 360 fire up at 0510 every morning over the last week or so, since its my DD right now.

Either the flowmaster super 44 offroad:

Or a Dynomax Super turbo muffler:

The last jeep I ran the Super Turbo Muffler and it sounded great.
I run a cherrybomb on my current rig, it has a nice deep tone, due to the large
pipe, it exits under the driver toward the ground.

I have been thinking about running this muffler as well, but I'm wondering about the clearance with it. Has anyone figured out an "X" pipe with these and headers?

I run the hushpowers and I can tell you there is no hush about them. Your blown out glass packs are probaly quieter, might as well run straight pipes.

What I did on my V-8 powered CJ7 back in the day was run the passenger side over to the driver side, go to a larger single pipe to the muffler and out.

They're good quality and give good performance. I don't know about the sound being easy on the ears though.

you haven't heard what I've been running for the last 3 years! It scares little kids and their mothers when I fire the old girl up...

(NO really!..at my Daughter's 4th B-day party last week, I scared the other kids from clear across the yard! Didn't help the CJ was in a tin shed!

That there is juuussst to funny :laugh:
reminds me of when I bought the last CJ7 on the way home stopped to get fuel and when I fired her back up everybody jumped at the same time. Looked like the ground had dropped out from under them :D fenderwell headers and straight pipes so of course it sounded like a car from Nascar was being fired up....

I put car chemistry's muffler inserts into my sidepipes and it made the purple horneys a lot smoother and quieter. It is pretty much a way to make your header collectors into a muffler.

I ran fenderwell headers & Purple Hornies when I was a kid, If the sound wasn't bad enough you could fry eggs on the floor boards. Who needs a heater.;)

yep i pulled the heater out of mine. then we did a winter run at browns camp in oregon. as long as we were moving, it was warm enough. every time we stopped, it got friggin cold! lol

CJ, the only thing i dont like about this phone is the way the site comes in all offset on it. having to scroll side to side to see the different parts of the page is annoying. but at least i can get my fix while im away from the 'puter!
