Travel days

Some of us arrived in Ouray on Saturday July 25th. This year we had 8 vehicles participate on the trail rides. Not everyone went on every trail ride. Usually we had 5 vehicles on a ride.
20198022335_0ab170d523_z.jpgDay 1_000 Ouray by BusaDave10, on Flickr
Ouray is a beautiful town in a box canyon. We gathered at the Historic Western Inn. OO7's daughter was having her first birthday.

Some of us stayed at the River's Edge Motel but never again. They overbooked and instead of admitting the mistake and trying to make things right they lied and kicked out Posi, his cousin, Bill and Carol early saying they didn't have reservations after Wednesday.
I had reservations to stay a couple extra nights but decided to check out early. They charged me for one more night than what I stayed there for even though I told them 2 days in advance that I would be checking out early. They said I needed to tell them about any changes to the reservations 24 hours before I check in. OK, rant off.

Oh and one more thing, I've already decided, there will be a 6th Colorado Jeep-CJ trail ride.

Yankee Boy Basin and Governor Basin

We headed out of Ouray on what started out as a 2 wheel drive road.

As the road got rougher a disabled Toyota with a broken ball joint sat in the middle of the trail. At the rest rooms the trail got more difficult and anyone not wanting to continue could wait for us there. My friend, Ben (not a member) left his Tacoma and got in my Jeep.

We did not think we could make it to Ouray by Saturday night because of my work schedule, but we pushed it and stayed at the KOA in Ouray since our reservations at the Box Canyon Lodge were not until Sunday.

Three miles south of Ouray we turned off highway 550 and onto Lower Engineer Pass trail. The path was very rocky right from the start.

Blackbear Pass and Imogene Pass

We had a group of four jeeps as we headed over Blackbear pass. Curt and Jo Ellen took Ophir Pass as an alternate route due to steering issues.
Many people were hesitant about this trail.

We turned off highway 550 and started climbing BlackBear trail.

A motorcyclist wiped out behind us. We helped him pic up his cycle. He was fed up with BlackBear and told his son to ride his cycle down. His son had his own cycle so I don't know how that worked out.

Karry was driving a 4 door JK. He kept asking me how narrow the trail would get.
BlackBearJeep.jpg
I tried to reassure him that very little of his tires would hang over the ledge. (the above pic is purported to be BlackBear but is a fake)

During our short break a jeep that must have been overly careful to avoid falling off the ledge climbed the rock wall and almost rolled his jeep. We all yelled at him to "STOP". Then to "BACKUP BACKUP". This guy had no business on BlackBear Pass. If he would have rolled he would have fallen off the cliff.

20206426111_c366759d0b_z.jpgDay 3_278 Imogene Pass by BusaDave10, on Flickr
Someone was trying to winch it back but the direction they were pulling it I think it was unlikely that they would get it back on the trail. It even looked like it might roll as they were pulling it. I positioned my Jeep on the hill above the Wrangler and pulled it back toward the trail. To prevent my CJ5 from getting pulled down the hill Bill anchored me with his winch cable. We had 3 winch cables attached to the Wrangler (not counting Bill anchoring me). I don't know how anyone could go off the trail here. When the Wrangler was back on the trail I asked who's it was. I then found out the driver was tipsy and smelled of alcohol. Makes me regret helping him out.

We were having some issues with our steering not having full lock to lock range, and given my inexperience, we opted not to do Black Bear. Instead, oldjeeplady and I went over Ophir pass to Telluride and returned via Imogene. If only we knew all the problems that lay ahead!

This is not taken with a telephoto lens! You can actually get that close. I had to remind my wife to stay back, this is still an unpredictable wild animal.

IMG_0116%20Custom_zpsvzj5pwk5.jpg

What a place to vapor lock! We were all alone on Imogene, and stalled going up hill. To make matters worse, we had lost drive to our rear wheels. To make matters even worse, worse, we had an experience that I don't care to repeat anytime soon. While going down a steep rock formation, the jeep went far enough off camber to just about make a few off camber skid marks in the ol' fruit of the looms!. I know we were probably not in as much danger of rolling as I thought...............but................

IMG_0100%20Custom_zpsn04rtrkx.jpg

Thanks to these great guys from Oklahoma (I think). They towed us up to level ground where I was able to prime the carburetor and get our Jeep running again. They stayed with us all the way to the top. It was an experience going down with only front wheel drive. We soon discovered it was only a Transfer Case linkage problem, and we were able to go the rest of the way in 4x4 high range.

Where were we to go tomorrow? I posted that we could go over Poughkeepsie Gulch if everyone agreed. Posi was eager to go up Poughkeepsie but he had open differentials. “No one has ever gone up Poughkeepsie gulch with open differentials” I told him. “You can't make it up 'The Wall' without lockers”. Well, Posi was about to prove me wrong.

Poughkeepsie Gulch.

Okay, now for a challenge. Posi wanted to come with his open differential rental jeep. I agreed to winch him up "The Wall". I guess I was the one in for the surprise.

Poughkeepsie Gulch is the hardest trail around here.
20172484796_fb5eb01871_z.jpgDay 2_070 Engineer Pass Trail Poughkeepsie Gultch Sign by BusaDave10, on Flickr

The trail starts of mild but gets harder as you go.
We got to a spot with lots of big rocks and boulders in the trail. There was no way around this big rocks.

In the above picture Posi high centered his TJ on some rocks. I was ready to get the winch out but Posi told us to just rock his rental jeep. He spun his tires and we all heard horrible sounds as the rocks scraped his undercarriage but he was able to get out.

Then we got to a big hill with lots of rocks. I was amazed that TJ was still coming.

Okay now we are at "The Wall". This is the hardest part of Poughkeepsie Gulch as the warning sign says.
20014382609_352fc77954_z.jpgDay 5_354 Poughkeepsie Gultch Sign by BusaDave10, on Flickr

There were 3 of us Jeep-CJ members and 2 other jeepers that tried the Wall when we were here.
All the Jeep-CJ members made it up "the Wall" but neither of the others did.
I was the first to try it. The Wall is actually 2 ledges. The first one killed my engine as gas flooded my carb. I re-started my engine and made it the rest of the way up on my 2nd attempt.

Then Posi wanted to try. I pointed out that they recently built a bypass to the Wall but noooo Posi wanted to try his rental, open differential, Barbie jeep on The Wall. Okay, okay my winch is ready but I've got to take pictures of this attempt.

WOW, he did pretty good on his first attempt.

With tires spinning and dirt flying he tried again.
20186059686_c2a65e21b2_z.jpgDay 5_378 Chuck on Poughkeepsie Gultch by BusaDave10, on Flickr
He did it. Posi climbed "The Wall" with open differentials. I never heard of anyone ever doing the Wall with open differentials. How'd he do it? I don't know but I've got to say Posi is an excellent off-road driver. Amazing.

If Posi can do it, MriPlayBass wasn't about to turn down the challenge.

He did it. MrIplayBass was the only one to make it on the first attempt. Great job! :notworthy:

Next a Jeep Cherokee (non-member) tried and tried but couldn't make it up the Wall.

He ended up turning around.

Then this red TJ tried the Wall.

Think there are enough warnings to discourage people who really should not go here?

Back home in Wisconsin and already planning what we are going to do to the Jeep over the winter in anticipation of next year’s get together. A great big thanks to BusaDave for all the work he did to make this all possible!

And here is the long awaited quote, "Oh and one more thing, I've already decided, there will be a 6th Colorado Jeep-CJ trail ride" (BusaDave).:notworthy::rock::ty: We will be counting the days!

Oh man, I'm so full, I think I've got to take a nap to sleep it off. Thank you all, loved the pictures, loved the videos.

A special thanks to 007 - We have all gotten used to digital photography, all in all it's great. But go back and look at those real honest to goodness film pictures. Oh my, now that's color and that's manipulating depth of field and can we mention focus. Nicely done sir, nicely done. ...... Now I wanna go play in the mountains!

Great pics and stories to go with them. Thanks to all for sharing the trails with us.

When we were at the top of Engineer Pass I shot several pictures that I made into a panorama. Check it out. It's interactive.
