What a rough ride...I have read about yj springs and am thinking about doing a conversion. It rides like a wagon..1980 CJ7 304V8 stock springs, 33" mud terrains. What do you think?...

I haven't heard of anyone who was unhappy with the conversion (although I don't have firsthand experience). Bringing the air pressure down in the tires will help too. Dropping from 32 to 26-28psi made a huge difference for me (31" and stock HD Springs). New shocks also made a big improvement in the ride for me.

Shocks are new..0 miles...came with jeep from PO. Also has near steering stabilizer.
What parts would I need to do the YJ conversion and what years are best?

I can't speak for what years are best but it's relatively easy. The swap to "yj" springs is really just swapping in 2.5" wide springs. They can be either yj springs or CJ rear springs. If you wanted to use CJ springs all you need is a is CJ rear springs, shackle mount and shackle. I believe you cut out the rivet that keeps the front hangers in position. Then it will simply bolt up. If you want yj springs you will need yj rear shackle mounts, springs and shackles and install them the same way I described for the CJ springs. That will take care of the spring side of the conversion.

You will also need to swap the stock 2" spring perches and backing plates for 2.5" so make sure your good with a grinder and welder.

Heres a sit that sell heavy duty brackets.

Good luck.

I went with OME YJ rear springs from a 4" Trail-Master lift. Road like a tank, now the axles actually move. Love it.

Spring plates
Spring mounts to the frame (8)
Shackles
Bushings

Sway bars

JP mag did a swap years ago.

Sorry the way I wrote that up was for the front only. The rear is pretty much the same thing. Yj rear shackle mounts springs and shackles.
