All,

I bought the Flaming River FR20005 steering column for my 74 CJ5 . I have never bought a steering before and I am confused on what is needed.

I am looking at the Grant line of steering wheels. I assume that I would need the steering wheel adapter kit made by Grant and then the Grant steering wheel itself. The Flaming River steering column says that it uses a GM spline years 69 to 94, I believe. Do I buy the Grant steering wheel adapter kit for a GM setup in those years and then the Grant steering wheel? Are there other parts that I would need in order to complete the steering wheel installation on the Flaming River steering column?

Thanks for the help.

I believe you are correct on what to buy, but a phone call to the place you are ordering from should clear everything up. I've never bought one their columns, but other consdierations are ignition switch connection, length, angle of install, and the mounting type. Keys will be unique, so make backups.

There are some good articals on rebuilding sterring columns, you would save a bunch of cash. But the choice is yours. Rod

Yes you have it figured out right. steering column + steering wheel adaptor
+ steering wheel.

I hope you figured the rise from the adaptor and the dish in the wheel on the overall height . My column is 30" and I should have ordered 28" length.
The wheel and adaptor will add several inches.I used the billet aluminum
1 piece adaptor because I think it is a cleaner look than the plastic collar that is the standard with the plain adaptor. You will have options on mounting of the column .Pics of what mine looks like in a early CJ5 ..
I bought the plain one and polished it with my H/F buffer.

O.K... So I got my steering column in, wired, and tested... Everything works as expected...

I bought a Grant #414 steering wheel with a Grant #3196 installation kit... I got to the point of installing the horn button... The instructions say to press the horn button down over the horn button retainer plate past the dimples and turn 1/4-1/2" to lock in place... I see exactly what they are saying to do... However, I cannot get the horn button to twist...

Anyone else run into this problem?!? Any installation tips concerning the Grant line of products?!?

Thanks...

I have the same steering wheel it was harder to get out of the box then on the column,my button had the dimples i didnt line them up to twist on i lined the logo up and pressed it hard straight down and popped right on.....hope this helps, and good luck.

Dan... Thanks for the reply...

I do agree that the steering wheel was relatively hard to get out of the box... LOL...

I was trying to put the horn button on like the directions stated by lining up the dimples and then twisting... I was able to get the button/dimples past the little slots in the horn ring but, for the life of me, I could not twist the button at all...

Tomorrow, I will try your approach as the approach that the directions state does not work...
