Flat Fender Kits

Anybody install a flat fender kit on their CJ? Or better yet, anybody build their own flat fender kit for their CJ? Pictures of your handy work would be great! There are several kits available....whay one do you like and why? Rod

I was going to build my own, but found some last summer for $140 from BTF.

Mock, then welded







I’ll add an inner fender once I burn in the front shock mounts I already cut off a stock inner fender to use if need be or I could go with 16g sheetmetal. The kit is heavy gauge and will work just fine. At $140 it was a no brainier for me

Built these last summer for the Scrambler. Made from 1.75" DOM and 10 ga sheet steel. I still haven't added inner fenderwells although I plan to soon.

And the final product. I have a bender, metalworking tools, and a MIG. There are some inexpensive kits out there that will provide the materials prebent and cut and just require fitting and welding.

Yeah, I thought they turned out well for a first effort. Thinking about making another set for my CJ5 .

No, I didn't Rod. I cheated and bought them from TDK when I bought the frame. Look easy to make though, just some 2" square tube with a hole drilled for a stock shock stud and a piece of 1/4" plate. If I had know, I would have done them myself. The bottom shock mount is in the stock location down on the spring plate so I could put I long travel shock I there to compliment the reverse shackle setup and fairly soft springs.

i like the blue torch, looks pretty nice for DIY kit...been thinking of these when i do my tub instead of the factory fenders but only run 33s so dont know if they are needed, but look nice.

What got me started was an internet search of custom dashes. I came across one on another forum that led me to this photo. Not only did I like the flat fenders, now I may try to make my CJ into a truck.

they look awesome and i dont mean to take anything away from ur fab work which is damn good but are you going add any kind of water channel?

No, I didn't plan to. It's a Jeep, 's bound to get wet under the hood regardless. Not sure if you noticed under there, but I like to keep it simple between the fenders - no electronics beyond the HEI distributor and GM alternator. Probably the most complicated, sexy thing under the hood is my homemade headlight relay wiring harness...and that really isn't sexy, just effective.

I do intend to get those inner fenderwells mounted in the next few weeks though.

These are actually the widest that I have seen. How wide are they? I'm guessing you have a TIG welder. Also I'm adding the round LED to the front as the turn signal. How did you cut the hole? My plan was to add sheet metal, and then use a hole saw. Rod

Bringing this thread back from 2014!! Hope 73CJ is still around..

I'm looking to do this on my CJ7 and would like to know what to expect on tire clearance.
Your mods say that you are running 38.5" Boggers. Can you elaborate on what suspension your running? SOA or SUA? What brand of Fender kit is that?

I put the aluminum Body on and called all the fender making guys asking about aluminum Nobody was doing aluminum in 2008. One company laughed and said "we're a steel shop".

I made these with a tube bender from .120 x 1.5" 6061 tube and 1/8" 5052 sheet.

In Minnesota you have to cover the tire with a fender to be street legal. That's why they're so wide. Tire size and bumper height are not applicable to vehicles registered with collector plates.

OME 2.5" lift YJ rear springs all four corners SUA with shackle reversal. Tracks of the highway pretty well concidering the height. 3" body lift.

Maybe when I retire I'll polish em. ��

Dang those look good! Didnt mean to take away from your custom fenders. Do you have any clearance issues with the 38.5's?

Id like to get away from my shackle lift and keep my 4" SUA. Id like to run taller tires like a 38 - 40. Im thinking about maybe the GenRight Hi Fenders In hopes of doing this without any more lift. Thanks for the reply!

This is not a CJ, but the guy used full size 1 ton axles on a very custom Jeep style truck. I'm pretty sure he built these himself as almost everything was custom built on this truck. I always thought these were some of the best I've ever seen.
