this is my first Jeep so excuse me if this ? seems ignorant.

I have been told that i can tow my Jeep about 10 different ways. it is equipped w/ a tow bar and wired. The PO said he only towed it once and it worked fine. He disconnected the rear drive line at the rear end, left the Transfer Case in N and left the key in the ACC mode to unlock the steering.

is this the correct procedure? Jeep will be running behind the truck at more the 100 miles each trip.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I flat tow mine 1000-2000mi. every year with no problems. Yes key in and unlock wheel, hubs free, T case in N. You do not have to detach the driveshaft but is added insurance I guess if you chose to. Depending on T case model it may not lubricate properly. With model 20 T case if you leave the driveshaft in place then you should LOCK the front hubs in per my owners manual.
Fill in your profile more completely with model year and driveline info.:D

my Jeep is completely stock. I dont know which model Front/rear axles are.

to be clear, NIETHER of the drive lines have to be disconnected or just not the front one?

Need more info on your Jeep.
For instance if you have a quadra trac T case the manual says disco both shafts. If you have the model 20 case you are not requirred to disco either shaft but you lock in the front hubs to facilitate case lubrication.
If you have the model 20 and CHOOSE to disco the rear driveshaft then the front shaft can stay in place with the hubs in FREE.

At least provide your CJ's model year and we can assist further.

thanks a ton for your help. is there a place i can look on the individual components to identify them?

I Toe'd my '74 2100 miles one trip with the front hubs unlocked, the Transmission in 3rd gear, the Transfer Case in neutral, and the rear driveshaft still hooked up on both ends. And that is with a Lincoln locked rear diff.
Never had a problem then or now with the drivetrain, the rest of the Jeep is another story! lol

Look above in the "docs" for lots of info. I don't know myself what is stock for the 76 CJ5 but I think I'm safe saying it's NOT quadra trac so pulling drivelines is not ness. As Mylittle CJ5 said no problems with his method and I have a CJ3b that was towed more miles than driven that way. There is a school of thought though that says the T case does not get properly oiled when only the rear output shaft is turning and therefore you need to lock the front hubs in( my 78 manual says to do this).
Myself I set mine up to be towed and have lock out hubs on all 4 corners so nothing is turning.:D

I don't mind pulling the rear drive shaft if going 200 miles or so. Why wear the u-joints and Transfer Case ?

Lock-outs in the front.

I put lock-outs and the rear and now there is no excuse. . .

to sum up..........hook the F-ing thing to the truck and drag it!

1. key in ACC position
2. Transfer Case in N
3. tranny in N
4. no need to disconnect rear shaft.

Thanks for all the help Gents. Will be towing it about 200 miles this coming weekend.
