Flywheel Info

i looked up flywheels on Orielly auto and they show the same part number for the 11' 164 tooth flywheel for both years, are they the same diameter? They for sure both for 258s? maybe they changed the casting number at some point between the two years. Both engines are supposed to be balanced the same. What are the part numbers you have? Maybe someone else here can give a break down on those part numbers.

Here is the difference between Oreilly fly wheels and the correct one. The flange on the center of the flywheel where it bolts to the crank should be recessed about 1/4 inch on the back side next to the crank The oreilly part is flush and this places the flywheel farther away from the starter and causes a noisy start up. I have pics if you want to see them also when both are flat on a table the ring gear are different heights. The diameter and tooth count are the same I hope this helps someone

Yes it would be beneficial to have pics posted for others who might be considering a new flywheel

I sure wish a US company would see there is a lot of money to be made in the restoration of the old Jeeps like in the other cars and trucks. But now it seems all we have is cheap China :dung: to restore our Jeeps which is really sad. Every time you install something that says made in China expect to have to do again. :(

I'm sure if it was feasible someone would do that. Problem is it is so expensive for a company in this country to build parts now unfortunately. Our great jeeps are a dying breed that are thinning out every year :(

Such a shame that the JKs are so popular that the CJs are being left in the dust

gert a young guy like you will be around to see it but probably not me. It will be interesting to see how popular the JK is in 30-70 years from now or how much after market support there will be for them. Who knows, the UV rays may play hell on all that plastic :)

God willing I hope to be around 30 years, they will be so busy replacing all that plastic on those JKs lol

There is another option for stuff like this, change your drivetrain over to GM stuff!!

I have been fighting with my starter chewing up the ring gear on my 401/GM Turbo 400 combo in my CJ7 for about a year now, and after three different starters and 2 different flex plates, I am done.

Right now I am in the process of swapping the guts from my AMC GM Turbo 400 over to a chevy GM Turbo 400 case that will be mated up with a TBI 5.7 SBC. Between the flexplate/starter issues, the endless oil leaks, the goofy timing cover / accessory drive setup, the fact that good parts are getting tough to find, etc. I am ditching the AMC driveline for something that decent quality parts are still made for. Its a shame too because that 401 ran great, but I am just tired of fiddling with it.

Swap'n the driveline to any other maker is a PITA for us folks that still have to SMOG test our CJ's. :notworthy:

Dave, I'd sure hate it if you tripped over that 401 in your garage... Just sayin' if clutter is an issue...;)

LG - If Dave's setup had cats and so forth, would it not pass?

Need a whole lot more than 'cats' in many states........

Well, what I am hoping to do is put the AMC GM Turbo 400 back together as a 2wd unit and drop the 401 & 2wd tranny into a rat rod CJ7 . I can live with occasional flexplate replacements on a 2wd street vehicle, its just a major pain on a 4wd, especially when it might leave you stranded in the boondocks somewhere. I'm thinking a bumpier cam and some headers and maybe a 3k or so converter, line lock, 4.11 gears with a spool, etc. - ought to make a fun around town ride. :D

Well, I've decided to keep my emissions stuff in place in case we move to Colorado next spring, even with my EFI install. All I'm missing is a stock cat. I just can't imagine that an EFI'd V8 with all stock emissions couldn't pass.. We haven't had tests here in 40 years so it's all greek to me...

Don't blame you a bit. I have a AMC 304 /GM Turbo 400 and haven't had any issues, but the whole drive line only has 50k on it. When should I expect issues and how would I know?

I would be ck'n the SMOG laws for the area your are looking to move to. ;)
It can be a real PITA. :censored:
I still have to SMOG my CJ every 2 years.
Get'n hard to find some of the emission control stuff for a 32+ year old CJ. :(

Maybe I am just unlucky? :dunno: I just ran out of patience with it, and I already had the chevy engine and tranny laying around so....... When I rebuilt the 401 I put a new flexplate in after the rebuild as the old one was looking kinda ratty even though it was still working ok. The new flex worked good for about 3 months then one day it made this nasty noise at startup. Inspection revealed a long section of ring gear with about half of the teeth erased. Install another new flex and starter, worked for a couple months, then same thing, although not quite as bad. Got another new starter and it has also removed a couple of sections of ring gear teeth, so I just gave up and decided to go a different direction. I don't know if it was just crappy rebuilt starters or out of spec flexplates or what. Just tired of worrying about when its going to leave me stranded somewhere.

If yours has lasted this long I wouldn't worry about it, I'd just keeping driving it until it breaks.:)

The rest of us can't help that you would want to stay where you are. :)Decades back it was a pretty good place to live, but no doubt it is not what it was then, but then no where is now either. Cali has slid off into the abyss. I have several relatives that are there and a sister that goes south to stay warm 6 months a year REAL close to you

YUP:rolleyes:
The only reason I'm still here, is all of my family(5 'kids' and 9 g'kids)are within 10-12 miles of us and my wife's job at Northrop(Plant 42).
To me, 'home' is the Rocky Mtns of Colorado. My wifes home is Missouri.
If I'm still alive(class 3 CHF)when my wife retires-PRK can KMA bu-bye.

Yeah family has that effect. I would like to get back to my home also.
