My son and I have our CJ5 down to the frame. I was wondering if anybody has every cleaned their frame using grinders with wire wheels to prep. for painting with success. We were thinking on doing it this way to save money on the sand blasting to use for something else.(parts) We have more elbow grease than $. Every little bit helps. Has anybody every done it this way or am I wasting my time?

Thanks

Actually that's probably how most folks do it, especially if they don't have the body off. All new paints need a surface they can grip to, so once the grease and such is removed be sure to rough up any shiny areas. New paint put over old paint is only adhered as good as the old paint under it, keep that in mind. When it comes to paint, prep is key.

I apperiate it. Since we've done the engine, Transmission ., Transfer Case that way I think I'll give it a try. Any suggestion on cleaning it afterwards so the paint will adhered?

POR makes a Marine-Clean and a Metal-Ready/Prep that they require before use of their POR-15 paint. The cleaner is a multi use cleaner that you mix with hot water, the hotter the better; and the metal ready is an etching solution for good bonding to metal(rusted or bare). Both run about $15 a bottle.
If you have a lot of rust, POR is made for that (Paint Over Rust) but it doesn't do as well when put over paint. Check the FAQ's on their website.
That's one choice for things. There are other similar products out there but other names escape me at the moment. Good luck.

Mar Hyde might be the other one... I've used that with some success...

Use a twisted wire wheel on a grinder. It will tear the heck out of rust, paint and undercoating. Paint the frame with Master Series first. Don't put POR directly on metal, regardless of what they tell you. If you want the frame to last, trust me on this. After the MS, you can use POR black or anything else.

The wire wheel works good for the flat surfaces. However, the sand blaster will strip the smaller crevices out. I used a cheap craftsman sandblaster kit (about $50) to clean my frame pieces. John
