i did the yj booster upgrade recently, and until today, i havent driven the jeep. the front disks were smoking when i got home. i re used the cj manual master cylinder and yj booster. it feels like the brakes are on all the time. do i need to bleed the brakes even though i didnt introduce any air into the lines? im confused:confused:

frozen caliper might be the culprit. i cant move the piston in. but i dont get why it gets worse when you drive? oh well, time to find some new calipers and hoses.

I'm thinking you have no play in your brake pedal. If so try adjusting your brake rod to relieve the pressure.

sounds to me like this combo isn't playing well with eachother.
I think you will need a power master.

Yes, it’s a possibility manual brakes need 10 psi and the disc need 2. However I would check the brake rod first being the easiest to do. The brake rod adjustment has been an issue that needs to be address on more then a few yj booster swaps.

the brake rod that connects to the pedal? i have shortened that already. im confused because it gets worse if i drive. its almost like im slowly applying more and more pressure until the wheel will hardly spin. could my booster be messed up? my calipers were not frozen, as i first thought.

If you have 1/8” play in the pedal and the rod is working as it should then I would check the combo valve as old dog mentioned. You could check the bone yard for a Jeep disc/drum combo to replace your drum/drum valve.

my jeep already has a disk front/ drum rear which i believe is factory. it has a prop valve on the frame rail. i went to the bone yard this afternoon and took apart a yj brake set up. i might need to shorten the one i have

If it came from the factory the combo valve is drum/drum. Jeep never offered front disc brakes on a 76.

What exactly are you using/shorten from the yj set-up you just picked up?

im going to shorten the pushrod that goes from the booster to the master cylinder. i feel like its too long and constantly applying pressure to the wheels.
