Front disc backing plates

I was thinking the PO removed them for unknown reasons but have seen a few pick of other CJ's and they were missing as well. Que pasa? a jeep option

They are there for a reason............to keep dirt and stuff off the pads and rotors.........Can they be ran without them...........Sure!

I believe the factory put them on all the brakes.
There is a couple reasons they may be gone, they tend to rust away after 30 years, and some people that offroad, take them off to keep rocks and sticks from getting caught in them.
