I am having an issue getting new front calipers and pads for my 78 CJ7 . I think there are actually two differant sizes that year, but the usual auto parts stores cannot see past thier computer screens to figure it out. I got new calipers and they look exactly like the old ones only the pads do not fit in them. I got new pads and they tell me there is two differant sizes, but they only show one size of caliper. Makes no sense to me. Any one else run into this issue on a 78? I think this was the first year of front disc brakes, so maybe they made a change during production early on?

Any chance you have swapped disc brakes? Cjs used a 2 bolt caliper and a 6 bolt caliper.

76-78 used a 1-1/8" thick rotor. It came with the brake package. 6 bolt caliper bracket. It bolted behind the spindle.

78-up used a 7/8" thick rotor. Became standard equipment. Used a 2 bolt caliper bracket that bolted to the knuckle.

There was overlap on 78 models.

Many Jeep parts catalogs have errors and the parts stores really don't seem to care.

Buyer beware. Know what you need. Look on line before going into the local parts houses.

Thanks. Good info. Jeep must have had some brakes left over from 77 when they started the 78 year production year than made a change in the middle of 78. I do have the older 6 bolt. I have dealt with Quadratrac.com on a lot of these parts and even they did not know about this and only list the 2 bolt caliper.

You are right - carryover parts.

Just ask for 76-77 parts and they should be fine. ;)
