Yo, New to the site but not to jeeps. 86 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 4spd is the issue.
front end right side is binding and clanking under pressure. Checked hub and found 4 of the 5 retaining bolts loose, No sign of wear. Tighted to spec and reassembled.
Still making noise. Next plan is to open up front diff.

any ideas what else to look for?

:ww: from the Republic of Texas to another 81 j-10
tough call on this one, what is the front axle?did you check the bearing in the steering knuckle, axle u joint, ball joint?? I think I would take a close look at the right end while it is on a jack stand before cracking the pumpkin. although you will end up doing it one way or the other, Keep us posted.:lpopcorn:

I had that problem twice.First one was the shock absorber tower was loose not much but enough.2nd was the hood hinges.I couldn't find it and the mechanic didn't believe when he did.

The hood hinges was the kicker.Sounded like the whole front end was clunking.Shimed the hood with rubber spacers and went away.

Did you check the spindle nuts behind that loose hub, I would check that as if the hub was loose it would sound as you discribed.

I'm going for the u-joints.
Let us know what you find,

this is happening in 2wd isn't it?

3"-4" of rain on the way and the Jeep is a muddy mess. I did a wheel bering test and all looks good. This weekend i will open the pumpkin and check it. I can't wait to fix. I have 5000 acres of trails just outside my drive way. Seriously. I have more fun @ 2-3 mph than I ever had @ 70mph. Who want to come to Ball Ground and play?

Welcom to the site. As soon as I get settled in my new house I'll take you up on that offer.:chug:

Feller's, we have great trails and lots of fun. We have more fun on the immediate 350 acres than you can imagine. Understand body damage is a possibility. the boys out west are the only ones who can promise no body damage. We have trees here. I can guarantee MUD, Mud and Tree's. BYOB BUT in moderation. Its just too much fun any other way. We can discuss everything in advance. I just cant explain the fun

Re: Front End Clanking under stress: Found the Problem

as I peeled the pumpkin loose I heard "Clunk, thud splash".

Spider gears spun but ring and pinion are fine. Kind of dissapointing really because I had it regeared with 4.10s not more than 5k miles ago. I have a stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and 34" super swampers and a detroit in the rear. I really don't think I was putting any serious stress on the rig. Oh well damage is done

Now: do I put a locker in it or just replace spider gears? My friend is the mechanic, I am one in training. Throw me your ideas. Need some suggestions
