Do they make a seal that seals both ways?to keep grease in and water out.

I've not seen a wheel bearing seal in the automotive realm that seals both ways other than the fancy aluminum axle seals for front axles.

Usually when Water gets into the front wheel bearings (at least for me) it's been because the hub has broken it's seal from the hub. Your 44's have o-rings on the hubs are they in good shape? when installing the hub the o-ring should give a bit of resistance when going in.

Is the water getting in from water crossings or just fron daily driving? I've seen water intrusion caused by removing the rotor shield behind the rotor. When driving in the rain water from the road can be forced past the seal if this shield is not there. Also cold wet brakes don't stop very well.

I've used a grease called "green grease" with great results. It's a synthetic used a lot in the farming industry that actually repels water.

Water got in when I crossed some REALLY deep water last fall.Being the lazy *** I am I didnt take it apart then.Paying the price now.Replace spindle hubs seals and bearings. I was just thinking maybe they made a seal like it used on pumps that could be used.
BTW I have a 30 not a 44 like I thought when I first got my Jeep :(

Water will get in through the spindle bearing as well. Really when all the seals are in good shape water should stay out. But check the spindle bearing seal.

A side note on the green grease it is very thick grease and probably not the best choice in every application. NLGI 2

Dana actually recommends an NLGI 2 grease for some of their u-joints,but for low speed operation (under 500 shaft rpm) they recommend a 140/250 viscosity mineral oil. Apparently not enough heat is generated at these speeds to move the grease.

We use it everywhere but ujoints and wheel bearings

Find a good bearing/seal supply store and match it up, used to get them for the D18 outputs & FR - RR pinions. Not worth it IMHO, just grease them full, if it has grease it can not have water or air/moisture, same space - same time.
Water, antifreeze, oil & grease are the cheapest things you can buy, but can also end up being the most expensive, when you have to fix - replace - repair.

Here is more info on the green grease.

It is NLGI 2. It is very, very tacky. I've run it in my CJ's 30 and 20 axles for about two years now with no ill effects. I have zerks drilled into my hubs and give it a small shot every now and then.

Tinman's info regarding manufacturers specs is likely correct and I would use this grease at your own discretion. The GG manufacturer does indicate it is suitable for wheel bearings however. If you have ever tried to wash it off your hands, you can attest to its water resistance.

Wooly, where did you put it? Do you have a picture? I'm interested in doing this to mine. I have the tools to do this and a box of different size fittings, so all I need is some direction. :chug: Thanks, Rod

That's exactly what I did to mine. You can also do the rears. Again, more tractor tricks :).
