I have an '83 CJ7 with the inline AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6. I just replaced the sending unit in the gas tank, cleaned the tank and replaced the fuel lines. Now I am not getting any fuel to into the lines let alone to the carb.

I checked that I have the fuel lines set up right with the main line from the sending unit going to the fuel pump but nothing. So it could be my fuel pump but how do I know if its shot? Any tips without taking it off the block? And if I do take it off any tips on how to know if it needs to be replaced?

Thanks for any help.

You have a mechanical fuel pump which does not pump the fuel through until the gas in the line reaches it. Since you put in all new lines it is currently sucking air. Not the safest thing to do but I usually pour a little gas in the carb and then fire it up. Make sure you pout the gas in and then get in the jeep to start it. There is the risk of a backfire and you don't want to take the chance of causing a fire. It may take a couple of tries but this usually primes the pump and then you will be good to go. By running it like this you pressurize the tank and it pushes the gas up to the pump. I would think your pump is fine if it was running before.

If you have an air tank it would be safer to seal the filler with a rag around the air gun and pressurize the tank a little, with the fuel line unhooked from the fuel pump.

Good option Purple, thank you.

Thanks for the help guys. I dont have an air tank so I will give Tommys way a try. I would have thought the pump would pull the gas into it from the tank even with new fuel lines so the tip was a HUGE help. Thanks again.:chug:

Nope gotta prime the pump by whatever means you like.
I've had this problem with jeeps in the past.
