Hello,
New guy here Having a problem with my fuel system. I started up the jeep this morning and noticed fuel pouring from what I think is the return line from the fuel filter to the tank. I have had the jeep for a few months and have not had this problem before.
The p.o. had the green line coming from the rollover check valve jammed into the return line from which the fuel is pouring from. (This must have become disengaged when i was doing other work at the rear of the vehicle). They also have one of the lines plugged coming from the top of the tank. From what I can tell the charcoal canister has been removed.
Why would so much fuel be sent back to the tank? What can be done to fix it? I have made sure the vapor return line on the filter is facing upward.

First off, I would suggest plugging off the fuel return line at the filter. From there you could find an online factory service manual or a repair manual that would show how it it is correctly hooked up. That port at the top end of the tank is probably the original location for the fuel return line to the tank.

Ok. I'll try that- what do you think will happen to the extra fuel that was being bypassed past the filter and to the back of the vehicle? Will the carburetor be able to regulate or process the extra fuel flow?

In the pre '80 CJs, I don't think it had a fuel return line to the tank. I believe the return line was added to take the pressure off the needle & seat assembly inside the carb float bowl and as an escape for fuel vapors that acquire in the pumping system. Since your vehicle was designed for it I would recommend replacing it. More important would be to reinstall a charcoal cannister to properly vent the fuel tank. The fuel pump does not work too well when a vacumn is created inside the fuel tank due to expelled fuel, nor is it a good idea to have the fuel tank vented into open air.

Thanks Torxhead! Sorry for the delay- I took your advice and tried plugging the return tube from the filter and the motor ran as normal with no leaks from the carb. I just received my charcoal canister and plan to install it soon to get my fuel system venting properly as it should.

Thanks for the update. I have to let the smog man inspect my system. Even with all the emmissions equipment on and operating, it still runs great.
