I am trying to figure out what exactly holds the fuel tank in my 74 CJ5 . According to quadratec there are straps. But after taking mine out there are no straps and no place for any. There is one bolt in the front and then there is one bracket that attaches to the rear of the fram and goes down and out under the fuel tank. Is this bracket supposed to somehow support the fuel tank? If so Im guessing the one from the passenger side is missing and there must have been some sort of rubber bushings on there at some point if not its metal to metal. Any pointers are greatly appreciated. Is there any good websites or books for 71-75 where I can figure out exactly how everything works and goes together because everyplace shows things that they say fit 74 but look nothing like what i have.

Try earlycj5.com they have a section just on intermediate cj's

thanks guys that helps alot! It turns out that I have had a different fuel tank installed at some point. I noticed when I took the tub off it had a evap. canister on it and never thought much of it because i thought they just cut the hoses. But according to the pdf files there is supposed to be hoses on the drivers side running to the canister and the nipples for those hoses aare not present and the whole where it is supposed to mount on the drivers rear of the tank isnt there. This makes the situation much clearer but the fix for it even foggier! Oh well thanks guys.

My 73 came with a full skid plate. I replaced the tank with a newer style jeep tank and used the straps. was nice having the ski in case something decided to come up and puncture the tank. But it was a beast. Good luck.

My 73 came with a full skid plate.

The brackets have a rubber bushing on all the mounts. The skid pan had a rubber foam that sucked up water and rusted most from the outside in. Usually took 9 years around here, MN.
