Gas doesn´t get into pump...

Hello every one:

I have a problem with my 78 CJ5 , it simply doesn´t get the gas from the tank into the pump,

First I tought a fuel pump replace should do it, but I wanted to prove that in the first place, so what I did is disconnecting the fuel line from the pump and put a hose from a gallon of fuel to the pump, the jeep started and ran very good, fuel filter was filled normally.

So, I am now completely sure that the pump is in good shape, I even replaced a couple of hoses that were too old to handle pressure and another that was ripped.

That doesn´t leave me with much options to go.

Any of you know how to resolve this?
I noticed two vacuum lines that are attached to the tank, I don´t know if vacuum can also be a problem.

Sounds like you have a pickup sock and it is clogged. Need to pull the pickup and clean it or even better toss it and add an inline filter.

did you say Inline filter? eliminating the filter it self for an inline? or can I try with an in tank filter?

I'm not sure if you have a filter sock in your tank. But it sure sounds like it. If you drop the tank. Pull the pickup and toss the sock, I would add another inline filter.

Does your gas gauge still work??
If not this would be a good time to replace the pick up tube assembly, it has a new sock/screen on it.
When you drop the tank be very careful with the hoses they can be a problem to find replacements for.

It actually doesn´t work.

I will try to find also the replacement.


i did dropped the tank twice and noticed that two hoses were too old and I replaced them, I wil take your advice and be more careful next time, now the repair will have to wait until holidays are over...

I had the same problem when I first got my Jeep. Turned out the steel fuel line was rusted out and it was sucking air not fuel.

Thanks 7D8CJ, I just took a look on the line and it is rusted, Unfortunately I will have to buy it aftermarket on a fab shop.

I will replace also the line from the pump to carb, it is made of copper and it is getting a lot of corrosion into the carburetor...
