Who would have thought that I would run into fuel issues while replacing my shocks and springs....

After jacking up the rear, fuel started dripping off both sides of skid plate. Knowing that it wasn't filled to the brim and no hoses under the tank, had to be a hole, so I drained the tank and keep bugging away at the suspension.

Finally got to drop the tank last night and get the tank out of the skid. I could see a small hole in a pretty good pitted area. This morning got at the bottom with the water hose and wire brush, it's much worse than I thought.

Now I have to decide new or used, steel or plastic, kind of leaning toward new metal and new skid.

Thoughts???

Been shopping around, can get in new tank, skid, filler, vent and center strap for under $200.

If you can afford it go for the 20 gallon poly tank, sending unit and ski plate that will get you down the road further if you do any road trips that comes in handy

IF-You can find an OEM poly(plastic)tank. Go for it.
My OEM poly tank is doing just fine after 31+ yrs.
Give these folks a call Tues. Most likely closed today(Labor day).

Good luck,

Thanks LG, I'll see what they have.

Something like 25-28 years ago I got tired of my 15 gallon tank and replaced with an after market 21-22 gallon long range tank. It was nice to be able to go longer than a week without filling up. Problem was it hung down 3-4 inches lower. When 4 wheeling the back end tendency was to get high centered and hung up. I went back to the 15 gallon tank probably 8-10 years ago but by then I was not using my jeep as a DD. Now if I drive it on a trip by the time I have burned through 15 gallons I need a break anyway from the seat to get out and stretch

NOPE-:D
Came with 20 gal poly as OEM. :dbanana:

Put in a 21gal. poly tank a year or so ago. With the CJ getting 10.5 MPG I'm glad I did. It is lower than the stock 15gal tank. It depends on how you drive your jeep, mine hasn't been a problem, but I don't push it as hard as a lot of folks do. It did take more fiddling than expected, instructions are non-existent.

That's what I meant when I said standard equipment ( metal tank).
Do you recall what the charge was for the optional tank?
It would be cool to look at your factory window sticker if you still had it.
Anyone that bought a new Jeep back in the 40s to mid 80s and still has their same rigs gets a big thumbs up.

My 20 gal poly tank was part of the 'trailer pkg' my '85 Jeep had. Included was larger output alternator, heavier rear springs, 20 gal gas tank, and 3 row radiator with shroud and tow bar. Also had 3:31 R&P with trac-lock LSD. Mine was a hardtop. Has a GVWR of 4150 lbs. I didn't order this. It was just there on the dealers floor.
Sold the HT & doors many, many years ago for a indecently high price, to a body shop.

Just ordered new 15gal tank, skid, center strap, and vent hose for $170 with free shipping. Submitted competitors lower price so that should get matched for another $20 off!!!

I don't really need a larger tank and do not have the desire to do any fiddling to get it installed.

Thanks for all the quick responses on this fine Labor Day [emoji631][emoji631][emoji631][emoji631]

21-22 gallon tank was more work. Had to cut skid plate and weld straps to extend it lower. Poly was easy. Sure wish I did still have the window sticker. Considering it came with a soft top it never was attached to the window😳. Dealer screwed me also. First and only new vehicle I have ever bought. I had no co signer so they made me buy an insurance policy I guess in case I did one of those 60 minutes roll overs 😃.

Be VERY leary of any Crown or Omix product.
Most likely from China and the QC is:dung:.

Well.....the skid plate is the Crown, I knew about Omix though. It'll still be better than the one that came of the CJ.
