OK, new to the board, new to Jeeps.....but don't hold those things against me!

I just purchased a new tank and sending unit for my 1973 CJ5 . Taking the stock tank out was easy enough. My stock sending unit has only one tube, the one that goes deep into the tank for fuel pickup. The new aftermarket one has two tubes...an extra that only goes about 2-3 inches into the tank. What is that one for? Should I just cap it off and ignore it?

Also, new sending unit has two electrical connections...my stock one had just the one where the eyelet for power is held down with a nut. This one has another slide-type connector on it. What is the slide connector for? Again, do I ignore it and just use the one where the power eyelet goes?

Thanks for your help in advance....hopefully you'll be hearing from me a bunch, as money allows!

You're are right with the cap off the short pipe. It's for a return. If you have fuel injection, you'll need it.

The connections are the spade terminal is for the ground and the stud is for the gage. Don't put 12v power to it or it will go up in smoke.

Good luck

73CJ, thanks for the reply! I'll cap off the return tube.

OK so the stud with eyelet is for the gauge, but what is the ground for? I mean, I know what a ground is for, but what will I use it for in this case, since my stock one didn't have a ground connecting it?

The old one should of had a ground. Maybe that s why it quit working. (mine is only sodered on the sending unit)
Just run a ground wire from the sending unit to the frame.

Old Dog you must get off work earlier than I.

The sender has a oring on one side and the other is exposed to salt = ground fault.

So they are being safe and put in a hard wire. It can go any where that is convient. If they didn't think they needed it, they would save manufacturing costs and eliminate it.

LOL. believe it or not mine is still the original,(at least I think it is)
I guess AMC was trying to save money back than.:D

OK, so I ran a wire to the frame for a ground and have everything hooked up. New problem. I CAN NOT get the tank back in. I'm working from my garage floor and I swear it seems this one is just too large. It looks just like the stock one, though...can't be off by more than millimeters! It simply won't fit. Maybe I'm not holding my mouth right, I don't know. Also, I sprayed it with some rubberized undercoat stuff, and didn't let it dry before installing and it is pretty much an ugly mess now. I don't know if I'm mad  or sad :(. I may be able to get back to it tomorrow...we'll see. Suggestions?

Got it in! Bent the tabs on the corners and some on the sides...now lets hope it doesn't leak!

Dang..nothins easy with these things!;)
Glad to hear it DID go in.:chug:

I don't see any mention of what carburetor you have. this will decide if you need the return or not.
