gas tank

i have a 59 CJ5 is what the title says. the previous owner put the gas tank inside the bed by the tailgate. and brought the spout up and out of the top of the inside fender. the body has a gas cap behind the driver side rear wheel factory. all pictures i can find and sites i visit call for the gas tank to be under the drivers seat. anyone know what year they started putting them behind drivers side rear wheel?

in 1968 they started the change
the tank went behind the rear seat , cutting out the x brace and was feed from the passenger side, not all states, but it started, kinda low but worked, also it upped the fuel tank capacity to 15 gallons, or as a extra could be 20 gallons.
Anyway if you have a modded tank ether should be a recess below the drivers seat not seen in the passenger seat. the benefit is larger tank, no tank under your balls. Also use the original place for a water tank you can pressure real easily. her are a number of places to get later model tanks, but they exit passenger side, so retaining your modded tank will be an issue with less expense for body repair. Seeing how no Older CJ has been left unmodified by previous owners, live with it and continue.
