I want to change my gears. I know it's a little involved but I would like to learn how. Anyone got any good websites or info on how to do it?

Check randys ring and pinion. Or just google and use several to piece the info together. Thats what I did for my Dana 20 . Seems like all the sites left something out.

You're going to need some special tools to do this which is why most just pay to have it done.

You can do it without air, but it's going to suck. You'll need something to pull the carrier bearings with. You're probably going to need a special torque wrench to set the preload on the pinion bearings.

If you have to buy all of this it'll be cheaper to have some shop do it. Or find a friend that has the tools.

You rebuilt your Transfer Case ?

:D

setting up an axle is more than likely the most challenging thing I have ever done with any machine and I am still proud of myself for doing it. That said, the fact is it is a heck of a lot of work with some very expensive tools. It will cost more to do your front axle than your rear, more equipment is needed.

I say have at it!! but be prepared to take a lot more time than you think it will take and be a lot more complicated than you think. As far as web sights Randie's is good and I think Yukon has some stuff and the service manual and check out Dana.

you will need a dial indicator W/magnetic base, lb/ft torque wrench, in/lb torque wrench, pinion bearing set up gauges, 1" and 2" micrometer and an axle spreader. If you don't have a BIG impact to set the crush sleeve on the AMC20 you better be an Olympic weight lifter with a loooong break over bar, that thing takes about 400 ft/lbs to set it and it is sooo long winded, it just keeps going and going.

you just spent 4 or 500$ and you haven't bought any parts yet.Good luck!!:chug:

Yup. More intimidating than anything. Same thing with doing ring and pinions. I did those myself in the past when I worked as an auto tech and had the tools on hand. Since I don't have the specialized tools on hand, I just ordered a 3rd member for my 9" all set up. Just have to decide if its something that you want to conquer, spend the money/time on, etc.

Think real hard about what IO is saying, the first time can be a bugger so unless you are dying for a challenge rather than driving your jeep, I'd take a pass.

If you run around with other local wheelers someone already has the tools and experience to do this. Usually you can rent/borrow the tools or throw them $100 or so to set-up a gear set for you. If you don't know anyone now search out a local club. Unless you absolutely want the satisfaction of doing it yourself this is a large investment for something you may only do once.

Im pretty sure he was taking a shot at you with this.. Dana 20 is a Transfer Case . AMC is a rear end

For the Original poster. I would take it some place and have it done. an expert can take on the up side of 4-6 hrs to do one.. a novice will work on it for days. Im lucky enough to have a guy across the street for me that will do the install for 250 if I take him the axle already out of the truck and stripped down.

Keep in mind that the clearance for axles are measured in .001. Best case scenario is you buy/rent all the tools.. spend at least 2 days per axle, buy an extra set of bearing to use as set up bearings. get it all together and it works great

The mid line scenario is that you dont get the clearance right and it whines.

Worst case is you get em back together, your clearance is off and you eat up the ring and pinion and destroy the bearing then your right back where you were to start.

Unless you plan on doing it more then once (two axles) you would be better off paying some one to do it. I have access to all the tools between my shop and a buddies but still have me neighbor do it.

rebuilding transfer cases and rear axles is an indication of mechanical skill......you misunderstood my post.....:D
