hey all, trying to find a exploded view, or a detailed write up on the gm style colums, a while back something in my column on my CJ5 popped, and the column was able to move side to side and up and down, almost like the bearing went, (I don't know) and then, as luck would have it last week we were out in the mountains, and the steering column felt as if it was locking up on me, so I think something may have fallen out of where it was supposed to be, into somewhere bad, and I don't want to buy a new column if I don't have to, anyone know where I can get a schematic on the gm style tilt colums? thanks:chug:

Here's a link I found on a quick Google search... You can click on the explotophoto's for a better look.

I'm sure there are others, but a google image search is best...

17. Steering Column

I rebuilt the one on my '81 CJ5 . My manual had a schematic in it so they shouldn't be hard to find. As I recall the rebuilding was a fiddly affair, but easy enough if taken slowly. When in there look closely at your ignition switch and parts around it. Mine broke from wear and might have left a less knowledgeable Jeeper in a bad situation. My switch would inlock the wheel, but lost the rod that goes to the switch located under the dash. A few minutes hot wiring and I was on the trail again. It would have been a LONG walk if I didn't know how to do it.

Heres the answer to what your looking for.. hopefully.

I picked up the tool for the pivot pin from autozone. Since your column is a 75 you should only have to worry about the blinker switch. Normally when i rebuild these I replace the blinker switch and horn parts.

Good luck

Oh and the pics in the post about removingthe lock ring shows him doing it the hard way. most parts stores sell a lock ring compressor tool. very easy to use and about $15. All in all if you have to buy the lock ring compressor, wheel puller and pivot pin removal tool your looking less then $50 in tools which an be easily recouped when your friends start paying you to fix thier wobble nuts.

Heres another write up.. keep in mind this is for a newer auto so alot of this wont apply

sooo I took it all apart, went and got the lock plate compressor, was in a accident a while ago and have lost a good amount of strength so the easier the better lol,

ANYWAY, I pulled the lock plate and everything was pretty straight forward, I got the entire thing apart and it looks like the upper bearing and lower bearing are toast, as in the lower bearing was gone, the upper bearing came out in 4 pieces lol, now the big problem Im having is trying to find the upper and lower bearings, I took what was left of the bearings to my parts girl and she just looked at me and laughed, basically a wtf am I gonna do with this look lol, so I ordered this rebuild kit but by the looks of it, its missing a bearing that I need, I dunno, the one thing I have never EVER touched on a vehicle is a steering column lol,

I dunno... im thinking mabey ill grab a xj or yj column, take the electrical stuff out of it, swap it over and be done with it, I dunno, getting frustrated and miss wheeling lol,

I have an extra column or 2 in the yard if you need any parts you cant find online let me know.

According to that pic thats a rebuild kit for a power steering box, not the steering column

Those should be the bearings your looking for.
IF its a tile column make sure you tighten those 4 torx bolts.

thats perfect, i did however, find a CJ7 in a wrecking yard, (around here there few and far between) and it had a nice looking column in it, took it home, opened it up, bearings are nice and in great shape, tightened up the torx on the tilt, threw my key switch in it and she bolted right in, so now i have a extra column lol, which im gonna rebuild anyways, so thank you very much for the link as i ordered them up just a few min ago :chug::chug:
