ok anyone with any input on a 85 CJ7 5 speed steering column has a grinding sound in one spot when you turn left or right. sounds like its in the steering column just beneath the steering wheel? can this be an easy fix or a total steering column rebuild? thanks

You will need a wheel puller and the retaining ring puller to dismantle the top end. It is pretty easy.
I would have to , at least, pull the wheel and take a look. the grinding in just one spot is what makes this interesting. It could be something as silly as the horn assembly or the trim ring is having a problem.

This sounds like what I am having in my Silverado, and I had in my TJ. I never could figure it out To me it sounded like something needed greased, and would go away after getting everything warmed up and moving. Does that sound similar? I am interested, cause I would like to fix mine as well.

When the upper bearing went on my old 79' the bearings started dropping out of the cage- the wheel still turned smooth but there was slop in it. It is pretty rare that the bearings themselves would flat spot to cause the grind- just not usually enough pressure on the bearing to cause that kind of failure, so as I.O. said probably interference from some of the other guts. Easy enough to tear apart and poke around.
