I’m restoring/ updating/ fixing... a Warn 8274 and I’m mulling over paint ideas. Is the harbor freight powder coat system any good? Kind of a stupid question I guess, since it’s just electricity that attracts the powder to the part being coated. . But are the powders and system worth it?

I’ve also been thinking about using prime and paint. There is more choices in color if I go that route.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

I buy from Harbor Freight all the time. You just need to watch what you buy. Somethings are good quality while other stuff is not.

The prep is key to powder coating. Sand/media blast the parts first and you'll get a much better result.

Having recently completed a total restore of an 8274...

I had numerous parts powder coated. But I used a commercial powder coater. One of the issues you may face (and my powder guy confirms), is that the aluminum cast parts of the housings, will 'off gas'. They should be baked for a period of time prior to coating to prevent peeling. Speaking of ovens, you will need something to bake on the powder. Using the wife's oven is not recommended...

Paint. Again, if you intend to do the housings, they are aluminum. And you will need to use the correct primer.

Take a look at Eastwood’s powder coating system. Their equipment and powder is great. They have a HUGE selection of colors.
Their instructional videos are also great.

I’ve seen Eastwood’s video and I was considering it. However, I found a powder cot guy in town and I think I’m going to use him because he can do a superior job and it’s less off my plate. I will mention the off gassing to him. Thanks for letting me know
