hard start

Just started working on my new Jeep, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a single barrel carter...now it always takes a few seconds to fire up even though already hot, and if it sits for any period of time it takes alot of turning over to fire, the previous owner said it was something to do with the fuel returning to the tank and its not suppose to..i thought he mentioned something to do with a vacuum line maybe...any help greatly appreciated

probably just the time it takes for the mechanical pump to pull the fuel to the carb? I used to have a problem with my Grand Wagoneer with 2bb factory carb where the engine would heat up enough to boil off the gas in the bowl when I shut it down. I would have to pull the top of the carb off (i got real quick at it) and pour gas into it to make it easier to start. it eventually started doing it on the highway so i install an electric low pressure fuel pump and it seemed to solve my problems.

The first thing I would check would be if there is any gas in the carb prior to those long startups. There are a number of reasons that can cause this.

Do a complete tuneup, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, where needed. Check all engine bay electrical wiring including the ignition switch . Check the timing, hook a vacuum gauge up and post a reading. The carb is the last thing you should be focusing on concerning hard starts.
