Would like to install new headers on my 74 CJ5 AMC 304 3 speed. I am not real familiar with headers, I do know I want full length. Can anyone suggest brand, etc...

Thanks,

Mike

I had the same setup in my 73CJ for many years. I always had the fenderwell headers with the mufflers under the floorboards and the exhaust in front of the rear tire. This is a popular and easy setup. I would look for the headers with the thick flange. This helps keep the headers tight. I did have problems with hot floorboards and little rocks that get caught in the top of the headers which rattle a bit.

I upgraded to a full exhaust out the back quite awhile back and I've been much happier with that. I used the stock manifolds and tucked the pipes up parallel with the frame. Quieter and a better system I think. The short headers usually found for Jeeps aren't really tuned for low end torque.

I also had fender well headers with turnouts just in front of the rear tires, I switched to inframe headman headers and had them ran out the back. I like this setup a lot better, much quieter and less fumes.

I have the cheap summit fenderwell headers for same year make model etc with xherry bomb mufflers. (yeah wanted it loud, im still young and dumb )

The cheap headers constaintly leak from the head to header. There are a lot of issues with this. Im currently on my 3 rd gasket set, have bought stage 8 locking header bolts, and still just blew a hole in the fasket again.

I may have a warped head or header flange, going to try another idea next, but mentioning all this as warning. Get what u pay for. Im paying for the cheap headers now...

But exhaust leaks are very common with headers fir our jeeps / AMC 304 ...

I too, got a set of cheap Summit headers (Flowtech), only mine are full length inside the frame rails, and I'm also going out the back with Flowmasters and 2-1/2" pipes..

plenty of clearance..:D

Copper gaskets! Only way to go. I haven't had to change mine in three years.

Would u by chance have a lunk where a fellow might find these magic gaskets

:chug:

So i was looking at that, and while i know all amc v8 heads /header flanges should be the same, it will not show AMC 304 ???

I did find these aluminum ones though  Percy's High Performance 66044 - Percy's Seal-4-Good Header Gaskets - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Same basic principal yes? Or is there an advantage to copper over aluminum? Or vise versa?

Not trying hijack thread, figured be good info for op too...

Ill link u the stage 8 bolts you'll want when on computer tomorrow... Im on this i phone and screens a little small...

:chug:

Something else to keep in mind while ordering header bolts, there are two different sizes needed for the AMC heads, so when you order your headers and they say bolts are included, there's about a 99% chance they will all be the same size and you'll have to buy different ones anyway.

There is two types of heads dogleg port and regular. Make sure which ones you have, they are most likely doglegs.

All v8 heads from 1970 (gen 3) and on have dog leg ports, rectangular port heads (gen 2) need intake and head mods to fit on gen 3 engines.
