1978 jeep cj 7 350 gm small block v8 with th400 automatic and quadra trac transfer case. 32"x 11.5" tires not lift kit
Hello All. I'm new to restoring. So far I've been able to change my fan, rebuild my Transfer Case , fix various electrical problems, install a new low range unit and install a new OME lift kit in my garage with very little experience all with the great help from jeep enthusiast forums just like these.

I now need to over hall my brake system. I've added larger tires and the added stress has caused something near my master brake cylinder/booster to create a brake fluid leak. In order for me to get the proper parts, I need to find out if my brake callipers are connected via a 2 bolt or a 6 bolt system. I've learned what each system looks like and i've set off to try to see what version I have.

Since I'm a brand new to this, I need some help in dismantling my front brake system and while I'm there, change the front pads. Unfortunately I have no Idea what to do next. Here are some photos of my front passenger brake.

Do I unfasten the 6 bolts as pictured in the first photo? Pull the assembly forward? The calliper itself has a small hex screw that I can remove as well but I haven't a clue what that does.

If anyone would be so kind to help me out I'd me exceedingly appreciative.

Thank you

First things first, take one side apart at a time so that you can use the other side as a guide to ensure that you put everything together correctly. Take lots of pictures so you can verify your work - If you are unsure, ask for help and post pictures - Lots of oustanding knowledge and experience from the guys on this forum!

See the attached document I came up with from a web search. It won't answer all of your questions, but should give you enough to get started.

Good luck! :D

:)If that Jeep is still original I do believe you have the 6 bolt HD system. That was an option in 77-78. The caliper bracket ( It is a heavy cast iron bracket)that is attached to the spindle by six bolts and is what the reference is about.
What is interesting is that brake upgrade normally came with Premium warn locking hubs which your does not have. What is the thickness of the "Rotor"? the HD system new was about 1.125" thick vented while the non HD was about 7/8" thick. Here is a picture how the Caliper comes off. Don't be afraid to disassemble this. Just pay attention to how it came off and stack your parts on your bench in order of dis-assembly......take a few pictures.

Thank you both for the helpful images. The jeep is an automatic with a replaced amc 360 engine. The previous engine was a AMC 304 amc. Since it uses a borg-warner Transfer Case connected to an GM Turbo 400 automatic Transmission , there are no locking hubs in the front as a Limited slip differential in the Transfer Case adjusts for what power goes to which axles.

Looking at the schematics, it seems I need to only unscrew the Hex bolt and then some how push a pin to release the calliper. Is this in fact the case? I'd like some feedback before I go ahead and start hammering things out! Oh what i would give for video of the process...

Thank you

:)Will that answers why you have no hubs.............
Yep that's it............has an aluminum looking or steel block and a spring like shim..........that goes in together and the hex bolt locks in the block and caliper.....it looks confusing but it's pretty easy fits in a groove ..........kinda looks primitive but I'm sure the GM engineers knew what they were doing. I have the same brakes on my Dana 30 front axle and they work fine.

So do I punch out the shim through the hole of the extracted Hex screw? The calliper is quite dirty from years of neglect I suppose and It's hard to tell what I need to knock loose.

Thank you

:)The spring shim and the block are about 2-2.5 inches long and go in and out on a horizontal plane....................they should come out to the outside.......you can't hurt anything , once the bolt is out just tap on that small block with a drift and it will come out..............when its clean the assembly is like this: You hold the caliper in place and then you slide the block and spring back in it is a very ingenuous method.

Hi Everyone,

With a little penetrating oil I've managed to loosen the hex bolt. I've also was able to slide out the the two pieces that hold the calliper in place. I am able to fiddle with calliper so that it has some movement on the rotor but as I try to remove the calliper, the brake pad is getting stuck on the calliper mount (which I can now tell is a 6 bolt calliper mount system). What method should I try to remove the calliper from the rotor so that the pad doesn't hit the calliper mount?

Thank you.

:)Stick a thin screwdriver or brake spoon in between the rotor and the lining a pry it open....it will just move the piston back and transfer fluid back to the master cylinder............you will have to collapse those even further once you get the new linings.........make sure no one steps on the brake pedal while the caliper is off.

Hello All!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that replied. I managed to remove the calliper, change the pads install a new brake master cylinder and booster and bleed the MC and the brake lines all because of the kind people on these forums!

I've got other issue with the engine but that is for another thread. You guys are the best!
