Hey everybody!

This is my second post, my first one being a few months ago while I was looking for a CJ to work on. Well, I found one and went for it. It's a 1974 CJ5 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6, T-14 tranny, Dana 20 Transfer Case , Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear. It runs and drives and has a solid frame all the way around so I feel like I got a decent vehicle here. It also came with a hard top (bonus!) but I have already taken it off for the nice weather we are HOPEFULLY about to get around here. Now here is where my questions start:

I have attached some pictures but I am wondering, does it have the stock windshield? I went and got a bikini top and the guys at 4WheelParts told me I wouldn't need a retainer channel because Bestop says it fits in the factory channel. I personally don't see a factory channel. and remember with my last CJ5 (an '81) it was definitely an add-on bolted to the top of the windshield.

If it is the stock windshield but there is no retainer channel, can I purchase a 76+ CJ channel? I can't seem to find one for the '74 (which makes sense if the bikini top is supposed to fit in the factory channel that my windshield doesn't seem to have).

Also, from the pictures I have included (sorry for the quality, bought a jeep instead of a phone), can you tell if anything else is not original? For example, I know the tail lights aren't original. I'm hoping to replace those rusty rear corner panels and make the tail lights stock again. Anything else you guys see, please let me know!

Don't know how to embed the photos yet so here's an Imgur Gallery: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Thanks for all of your help! I have big plans to rebuild this CJ but I will be back to ask questions about all those projects in the future!

Center speaker and rear bumper! I know that's obvious, but that's all I can tell. Some guys will get you better answers. How much was it?

You mean that center speaker isn't stock?! :)

I picked it up for 3.5k... I'd been searching for a while and everything around that price point wasn't running or had "just been parked for a while but it'll start"... technically I don't know if it was a good deal but I'm happy with it! :chug:

:ww: back - nice find.

Th windshield frame is from a 76 and up (flat top and wiper motor inside the cab.)
Here are instructions on the codes for our site -->> Jeep-CJ Forums - BB Code List

Awesome. Thank you for clearing up the windshield question. I guess that means I can just buy a retaining channel for a '76. Wish I would have known more before my purchase but it's a(nother) learning experience. You think you know what you're getting and...... not so much.

Thanks again!

$3.5k, it runs and came with hard top, I think that's a good find. Especially if you're happy with with. I paid a bit more for mine and no hardtop, still happy with the ole girl.

So true, backed the jeep into the shop y'day after taking it for a spin after new suspension. And now.....power steering fluid dripping from the steering box. Best case, I just have to BUY a rebuild kit.

The plan is to let this CJ slowly bankrupt me...

Looks like you found a good deal.

Just checked out your lift upgrade thread I'll be in touch for some advice on the suspension! The things I am hoping to tackle first are brakes, suspension, and tires... That is unless I find something that needs my attention sooner rather than later like the Transmission ...

Have fun with it, I love taking my CJ to town, always get looks (jealous looks in my mind). It is a never ending hobby. With my lift, I wasn't looking for the big name company's, just trying to get new hardware under it.

The tub is not a 74, it's either a 76 or 77.

How are you sure? What tips you off? The back all looks good to me but I don't doubt that it's not original for a second...

Good eye! :chug: I never enlarged the pics so I didn't notice the 'Jeep vs 'Jeep'. :notworthy:

Three giveaways on that tub tells me it is not a 74. Knowing that, one giveaway tell me it's a 76 or 77.

I'm sure a few here know and other will have fun figuring it out.

I'll post tomorrow morning.

Edit: CJ, you got it brother! Plus no reverse lights, and incorrect taillights.

What makes me think it's a 76 or 77?
