So I took my steering column apart and went to put it back together and not only is the shaft rocking back and fourth it's moving up and down! I will take suggestions about changing upper and lower bearings but they seemed to be fine when I took them out!! Any steering column Gurus out there??

Also this is a 1979 CJ7 that is automatic! If anyone has part numbers for the lower and upper bearings I will buy them just to be on the safe side!!

when you say that you took it apart.......

how apart is "apart"?

Tilt?
and is it rocking back an forth installed?

Are you sure it's the bearings? Most of the time the GM tilt steering column (I'm assuming it is tilt because you didn't say) play is from a loose coupling. oh and before you go spending too much
sometimes the price of a salvage column is better than the hassle of working on them

and there is a couple of bolts right behind the "tilt spring" that have a nasty habit of coming loose
